Real Madrid are reportedly weighing up the possibility of snapping up 25-year-old Italian international Lorenzo Pellegrini on a Bosman move next summer.
According to a report by Spanish outlet Fichajes, Real Madrid appear to be already laying down their plans for next summer’s transfer window. And one of their key targets for 2022 is Lorenzo Pellegrini, with the prospect of signing the AS Roma captain on a Bosman move being considered.
Lorenzo Pellegrini has transformed into one of the best midfielders on the planet since rejoining AS Roma from Sassuolo in the summer of 2017. Now a key figure for club and country, the 25-year-old has made such a rapid progress in the Italian capital that he is the club captain for the Giallorossi now.
To date, Pellegrini has made 160 appearances for Roma while chipping in with 27 goals and 36 assists along the way. The Serie A giants, though, are in a precarious position over his long-term future, seeing as the Italian international has entered the final year of his contract at Stadio Olimpico. Such a situation has now alerted Real Madrid.
At Real Madrid, Carlo Ancelotti is a keen admirer of Pellegrini’s talents and the Italian manager has personally requested his signature for next summer. The interest in the 25-year-old makes a world of sense as well, despite the addition of Eduardo Camavinga this past summer.
That is because Luka Modric is in the twilight of his career while Toni Kroos is also approaching the final phase of his career, with age starting to show its effects on him. Add to it the fact that Casemiro will soon be entering his thirties, and it is clear that a long-term midfield core needs to be created to succeed Real Madrid’s three stalwarts.
So, with Federico Valverde and Camavinga already in place at the Santiago Bernabeu, Real Madrid are looking to add a third piece to the puzzle, with the likes of Paul Pogba, Nicolo Barella and Ryan Gravenberch among those who have been linked with the Merengues in recent times. And Pellegrini is a viable target as well for Real Madrid.
If the 25-year-old indeed runs out his contract at AS Roma, he would become an even more attractive target for Real Madrid, who are looking to spend big on Erling Haaland next summer. So, a free transfer in the form of Pellegrini, who has been linked with Barcelona as well, would be quite helpful on the financial front, although it remains to be seen if Roma can secure his long-term future.
