Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly eyeing Borussia Monchengladbach playmaker Jonas Hofmann and remain interested in making a move for the 29-year-old German international.
According to the reports in Transfer Market Web, Tottenham are still interested in Borussia Monchengladbach winger Jonas Hofmann after their summer pursuit for the player resulted in nothing substantial.
After progressing through the youth ranks at TSG Hoffenheim, Hofmann spent a couple of years with Borussia Dortmund before securing a move to Gladbach back in January 2016. Since arriving at Borussia Park, the winger has developed into an integral figure in Gladbach’s starting XI, making over 150 appearances and contributing 23 goals and 33 assists.
Hofmann enjoyed his career-best return in the 2020/21 campaign, recording eight goals and 13 assists in 32 appearances for Die Fohlen across all competitions. This red-hot form grabbed a lot of interest throughout the summer, with Bayern, Chelsea, and Tottenham having been keen to acquire his services. However, a summer transfer move never materialized.
The six-time capped German international has carried that form into this season. Reading out some of his stats from this campaign, he is averaging 2.3 shots, 1.8 key passes and has one goal in four Bundesliga games. Predominantly an attacking midfielder, his versatility means he is capable of playing in multiple positions in the frontline or midfield. He has also been deployed as one half of the double midfield pivot owing to his intelligent game-reading ability.
After a strong start to their campaign, Tottenham have stumbled emphatically, and the lack of creativity and energy from midfield is visible on the pitch. Spurs boss Nuno Espirito Santo will definitely be looking to bolster his attacking options to address the issue in the coming transfer window. And Hofmann could prove to be a shrewd addition with his versatile nature, an added advantage for the Portuguese head coach.
Tottenham’s current midfield roster lacks a ball-carrier and goalscorer from the midfield. This leaves a void for an energetic box-to-box midfielder at the centre of the park, which the German, with his creative impetus, can fill in the role perfectly. Moreover, Tanguy Ndombele is currently out of favour at Spurs and can leave the North London club in the near future. Hence the Lillywhites’ may need an adequate replacement.
The 29-year-old is under contract with Borussia Monchengladbach till the summer of 2023 with no release clause. However, considering the player’s age, the Bundesliga outfit would be tempted to consider a sale at the right price. During the summer transfer window, the Foals slapped a €22 million price tag for their valuable asset. It may require a similar kind of transfer bid to lure Gladbach into the deal.
What now remains to be seen is if there is any truth to these reports of Spurs retaining an interest in Hofmann and whether the Tottenham board steps up to make an attempt to sign the player in the January transfer window.
