Transfer News: Real Madrid ace Marco Asensio rejected Tottenham approach

Real Madrid star Marco Asensio reportedly turned down a chance to secure a move to Tottenham Hotspur in the summer transfer window.

According to a report from Spanish publication Marca, Tottenham Hotspur tried to sign Marco Asensio in the summer transfer window only for the Real Madrid attacker to reject a move and stay put in Spain.

Asensio has been with Real Madrid since 2015, having arrived from RCD Mallorca. After a loan spell with Espanyol, the 25-year-old was integrated into the first team and he made a huge impression early in his career and was widely tipped as the future of the Merengues attack.

However, an injury in 2019 saw him miss get sidelined for a lengthy period and he has since failed to hit top form. In 48 appearances last term, Asensio managed a paltry total of seven goals and two assists, falling down the pecking order. This resulted in him missing out on the UEFA Euro 2020 while he is yet to start a game in the new season either.

Despite his stuttering form over the past year or so, Asensio did not have any shortage of suitors in the summer. And, it has now emerged that Tottenham Hotspur were one of the clubs who tried to sign the 25-year-old Spanish international.

The Lilywhites had a fairly impressive transfer window that saw them bring in five signings in the form of Pierluigi Gollini, Cristian Romero, Bryan Gil, Pape Matar Sarr and Emerson Royal, while they even managed to retain Harry Kane as well.

However, another attacking addition would have come in handy for new manager Nuno Espirito Santo, seeing as Gil is still very much in the fledgeling stages of his career while Lucas Moura and Steven Bergwijn have not always been the most consistent of performers. A move for Wolves’ Adama Traore was touted heavily, but it never materialised.

Turns out, the north London giants also tried to sign Asensio from Real Madrid. Apart from Spurs, even Serie A giants AC Milan were keen on securing the services of the 25-year-old Spanish international. However, he turned down both the clubs in hope of reviving his career at Real Madrid, with manager Carlo Ancelotti also having faith that the forward can be key if he gets going.

It will be interesting to see if Asensio is able to get back to his best at the Spanish capital club or either of Tottenham or Milan come back for the Spaniard in the next transfer window.
