Real Madrid have reportedly identified Robert Lewandowski as a potential alternative for Erling Haaland for 2022, with PSG also pursuing the Norwegian.
According to a report from Spanish publication AS, Real Madrid have set their sights on Bayern Munich superstar Robert Lewandowski as Plan B in case their pursuit of Erling Haaland fails in the summer of 2022.
Real Madrid have grand plans of building a ‘Galactico’ strikeforce for the next season and have identified Kylian Mbappe of PSG and Borussia Dortmund’s Haaland as their priority additions in 2022. Mbappe, given that he is in the final year of his contract and has his heart set on a move to the Spanish capital should not pose any issues with regard to a transfer next summer.
However, things could get tricky with the pursuit of Haaland. The 21-year-old, who has plundered 63 goals in 64 games for Dortmund since arriving in January last year, will see a release clause worth €75 million kick in next summer. While Real Madrid are believed to be the frontrunners in the early stages, the likes of Manchester United and Manchester City are also very much interested.
In addition, the aforementioned report claims that PSG, too, will make a concerted effort to sign the Borussia Dortmund striker as a replacement for Mbappe should the 22-year-old World Cup winner leave for Madrid next summer. This could potentially derail Los Blancos’ plans of landing Haaland.
As a result, Carlo Ancelotti’s side are keeping their options open, with Robert Lewandowski emerging as an alternative. At 33, he would not be a long-term fix for Real Madrid, but the Poland international has undoubtedly been one of the most prolific goalscorers in European football over the past decade and has broken all sorts of goalscoring records in the Bundesliga with Bayern Munich.
Lewandowski’s current contract with the record German champions runs till the summer of 2023. And, reports towards the end of the recently concluded transfer window claimed that the Poland captain had informed Bayern that he was seeking a new challenge in his career, making him potentially available on the market for next summer.
So, while Haaland continues to remain the priority for Florentino Perez & co., Lewandowski has emerged as a Plan B in case they miss out on the Norwegian. Quite how they would fit in two ageing strikers in the side, with Karim Benzema also at Real Madrid, would then be the question if the Merengues do end up going after the Bayern Munich hitman next summer.
