Transfer News: Liverpool, Leeds United, Aston Villa ponder late move for Mikkel Damsgaard

Leeds United, Liverpool and Aston Villa are in contention to make a late move for Sampdoria starlet Mikkel Damsgaard.

A report by Italian newspaper La Repubblica, as relayed by Sport Witness, has offered an update on Mikkel Damsgaard’s situation. The young winger remains at Sampdoria despite emerging as one of the most exciting players of UEFA Euro 2020 in the summer. But with a few days still remaining before the transfer market comes to an end, the report believes there are three Premier League clubs who could make a late move.

Liverpool are among the clubs in contention to make a late push to sign the Dane. They are joined by Leeds United and Aston Villa, though it appears Tottenham Hotspur have backed out of the race, perhaps pushing their focus on the capture of Barcelona sensation Ilaix Moriba, currently favoured to join RB Leipzig.

A star for Denmark at UEFA Euro 2020, helping his country reach the semi-final of the competition, Damsgaard has been linked with a move to Liverpool throughout the course of the summer. It appears he was one of Jurgen Klopp’s many options in the market, in his bid to add more depth in the attacking department.

They are yet to replace the departed Xherdan Shaqiri while the steady decline of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keita has put pressure on the club to sign a new attacker.

Damsgaard fits the bill perfectly due to his chance creation and ability to bombard opposition defences. With just two goals and four assists last season, the youngster does not have the best of numbers in club football. But his performances in UEFA Euro 2020 does suggest that he is capable of playing at the highest level of football.

However, Liverpool are set to face stiff competition for Damsgaard, with Leeds United prepared to make a late swoop for the Dane. Having missed out on Matheus Cunha and most likely the €30 million rated Noa Lang, they have set their sights on Damsgaard, although he too cost a fortune for Marcelo Bielsa.

Aston Villa, meanwhile, are looking for more competition for a new look attacking setup, consisting of new signings like Leon Bailey and Emi Buendia. The young Sampdoria starlet could provide just that, although it remains to be seen whether the player himself favours a move to Villa Park, over Liverpool, knowing the latter can offer him Champions League football.
