Predicted Manchester United lineup against Southampton: Sancho set for full debut; Varane, Cavani in contention

Jadon Sancho is set to make his full debut while Edinson Cavani and Raphael Varane will be in contention to feature when Manchester United face Southampton on Sunday.

Manchester United will be looking to continue their perfect start to the season and make it two wins in a row when they lock horns with Southampton at St. Mary’s Stadium on Sunday afternoon. And Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could be able to call upon several first-team players who were missing last week.

Jesse Lingard is back at the disposal of the Manchester United boss whereas Edinson Cavani and Raphael Varane have trained this week. In addition, Eric Bailly and Amad Diallo have rejoined full training after returning from their participation with Ivory Coast at the Tokyo Olympics.

That means only four first-team players are missing for Manchester United ahead of their trip to Southampton, with the major absentee being Marcus Rashford (shoulder). The likes of Dean Henderson (match fitness), Alex Telles (ankle) and Phil Jones (knee) miss out as well. Solskjaer did provide team news update during his pre-match press conference.

The Manchester United boss said, “With regard to team news, that’s a boost as well, Edinson’s joined in, Raphael’s joined in and we’re getting fitter and fitter. You’ll see on Sunday. They’ve worked well. They’ve had minutes. We’ve had a very good week ourselves. We’ll see who’s making the flight down to Southampton on Saturday.”

“With regards to Dean, he was tired after trainings. He felt that. We needed to check him up. Now he feels much better. He’s passed all the tests we’ve gone through with him. He’s training and building himself up again because he’s lost a few weeks. He’s working hard in the gym, working hard on the grass.”

With Dean Henderson still not completely fit, David de Gea becomes a certainty between the sticks for Manchester United, who will line up in a 4-2-3-1 formation against Southampton. Varane is unlikely to be fit enough to start just yet, meaning Victor Lindelof will form the central defensive partnership with captain Harry Maguire. Meanwhile, Luka Shaw and Aaron Wan-Bissaka pick themselves as the two full-backs.

Up ahead in midfield, there ought to be no looking past Scott McTominay and Fred following their formidable showing against Leeds United last weekend. With McTominay and Fred forming the midfield double pivot, Paul Pogba will once again take his place in an advanced position out on the left flank, although he will have a free role high up the pitch.

The only significant change from last week is likely to see Jadon Sancho come in for Daniel James to make his full debut for Manchester United. Bruno Fernandes will reprise his usual no. 10 role while Mason Greenwood will lead the line against Southampton, leaving Anthony Martial and Cavani as backup options on the bench.
