Transfer News: Everton told to pay €20 million for Matheus Nunes

Everton will reportedly have to shell out a transfer fee of €20 million if they wish to secure the signing of midfielder Matheus Nunes from Sporting CP.

According to a report from Portuguese publication Correio de Manha, Everton have learnt how much it will cost them to sign Brazilian midfielder Matheus Nunes from Sporting CP.

The Brazil-born midfielder has spent his entire career in Portugal. Nunes started out at the academy of Ericeirense before making the switch to Estoril Praia in the summer of 2018. Only six months and eight senior appearances later, the 22-year-old was picked up by Sporting CP.

Nunes spent the first eighteen months of his stint with the club’s B team before making his senior debut in June last year. Since then, the 22-year-old has gradually grown into a regular for Ruben Amorim’s side, racking up 52 appearances in which he has three goals and four assists.

Nunes was a regular fixture in the Sporting CP side that ended their long wait for the Primeira Liga title last season, while he also helped the Lions with the Portuguese Super Cup earlier this month, getting an assist in the 2-1 win over SC Braga. Naturally, the 22-year-old’s progression over the past year has led to him attracting many admirers, with Everton being one among them.

Everton, as things stand, have a well-stocked midfield unit with the likes of Allan, Tom Davies, Abdoulaye Doucoure, Andre Gomes and Jean-Philippe Gbamin, while Fabian Delph also remains on the Toffees’ books, even though question marks linger over the veteran star’s future at Goodison Park.

Furthermore, Gbamin has had a torrid time with injuries since joining Everton, while the likes of Davies and Gomes have not really been able to establish themselves in the setup either. So, there is certainly room for manager Rafael Benitez to bring in another central midfielder this summer before the transfer window slams shut.

While a move for Tottenham Hotspur’s Harry Winks has been touted, Nunes, too, is very much on the agenda for the Merseysiders. And now, it has emerged that they could be able to sign the 22-year-old Brazil-born midfielder for a sum of just €20 million.

Considering that Nunes still has four years left on his contract with Sporting CP, it would be a major coup if Everton were to sign him for the aforementioned fee. A versatile player capable of anchoring the midfield as a No. 6 or playing in a slightly advanced position as well, the 22-year-old has his best years ahead of him and could prove to be a shrewd long-term investment for Benitez & co.
