Transfer News: Patrick Bamford set to snub Tottenham move

Leeds United star Patrick Bamford is ready to spurn interest from Tottenham Hotspur and stay on at Elland Road

According to the Mirror, Leeds United striker, Patrick Bamford will turn his back on a potential move to Tottenham Hotspur this summer.

The Lilywhites are keen to add the 27-year-old to their squad as they look to build a new era under Nuno Espirito Santo. This season, the North Londoners got off to an excellent start, beating defending champions Manchester City at home.

While the whole team impressed, the absence of a top marksman on the field was visible. Having a clinical striker on the field could have seen them extend the lead over Pep Guardiola’s side on the night.

As things stand, Harry Kane, who has been heavily linked with a move to Manchester City, remains the club’s top striker, and there is a void behind him in the Spurs pecking order. With or without Kane, they must bring in another forward this summer.

In Bamford, they will be getting a proven striker who would fit like a glove in their system. A rather unassuming player, his finishing and movement make up for his other humble traits. He could relish playing alongside Son Heung-Min and Steven Bergwijn and will find plenty of opportunities to find the back of the net.

Bamford is, however, happy at Elland Road and is loving life under Marcelo Bielsa. He was the Argentine’s first marquee signing in 2018 and has two more years to go on his current contract.

He led the Leeds scoring charts last season and looks comfortable in the top flight. He stepped up well for the Yorkshire outfit as they finished a respectable ninth position in their first season back in the Premier League. Bamford can, in fact, count himself unfortunate not to be named in the England squad for the Euros.

Leeds, for their part, are also keen for the association to continue and will look to reward the player for last season’s performances. A well-travelled player, it is at Leeds that Bamford found himself a club he calls home. He is settled at Elland Road and has little reason to leave. While Tottenham are arguably in a better position than Leeds, there is little reason for him to swap clubs, as he would end up playing second-fiddle to Kane, if he stays.

Despite their opening day loss against Manchester United, there is much optimism around the exciting side that Bielsa is putting together. Bamford’s decision is understandable given the career path he has had.
