Transfer News: Aston Villa join Tottenham in Mikkel Damsgaard race

Aston Villa are ready to rival Tottenham Hotspur in the pursuit of Mikkel Damsgaard, expected to cost around €30-35 million this summer.

A recent report from Calciomercato has mentioned Aston Villa as one of the clubs interested in the services of Mikkel Damsgaard. The Premier League outfit is involved in a long list of potential suitors that includes league rivals Tottenham Hotspur as well as Italian giants like Juventus, AC Milan and AS Roma.

Sampdoria are open to offloading Damsgaard in the summer, but they are stringent about their €30-35 million valuation. They have already made it clear that the club is not interested in any sort of swap deal, which is unsurprising as they need financial injection more than anything else, in the wake of a pandemic.

Tottenham Hotspur were one of the first clubs to express the desire to sign the 21-year-old Dane this summer, shortly after his heroic performances for his country in Euro 2020. His free-kick goal against England, in particular, raised a lot of eyebrows in Europe.

However, Spurs have since brought in Bryan Gil from Sevilla. The youngster is expected to add the much-needed quality in the right-wing slot. But they continue to be linked with Damsgaard, although any move could hinge on any attacking players departing the club in the coming weeks.

Aston Villa, too, have had a busy transfer window so far. They had brought in Leon Bailey and Emi Buendia even before announcing the departure of Jack Grealish, who moved to Manchester City earlier this month, shattering Premier League’s transfer record.

However, Dean Smith remains keen on adding more attacking options to his disposal. The financial injection from the sale of Grealish has given him to power to do, with the club notably being linked with a swoop for Joaquin Correa as well.

That said, Aston Villa’s priority right now is to sign a defensive-minded player. Smith wants to improve his options in the midfield and central defensive unit, with Atletico Madrid star Mario Hermoso emerging as a potential option.

As such, it won’t be surprising to see the young Damsgaard miss out on the opportunity to arrive in England this summer. In fact, he could end up remaining at Sampdoria, knowing most of the Italian clubs will be unable to match their €30-35 million due to the financial crisis inflicted by the pandemic.
