Newcastle United are reportedly exploring the possibility of signing ex-Barcelona forward Carles Perez, who is tipped to leave AS Roma this summer.

According to a report from Calciomercato, Newcastle United have entered the market for Carles Perez. The former Barcelona forward faces an uncertain future at AS Roma in the wake of the pandemic that has forced Giallorossi to cash in on their star players. It has put the Premier League outfit on red alert.

The report states that Perez could be available for a season-long loan deal with an obligation to buy next season. It could bode well for Newcastle United, who are closing in on the €25 million capture of Joe Willock that will cripple their powers in the market, to an extent.

The Magpies have also expressed the desire to sign another Arsenal star in Rob Holding. But it appears Steve Bruce is also determined to shore up his options in the attacking department, knowing his team could have been relegated had it not been for the heroics of Willock during the second half of the campaign.

Perez is an interesting choice for Newcastle United, given that he is not among the star players for AS Roma. Formerly of FC Barcelona, the winger had initially joined the club at the start of last year on a short-term loan deal. His move was later made permanent for a fee of €11 million last summer.

Unfortunately, the Spaniard has not quite lived up to his potential. He mustered only 761 minutes of league football this past season, falling behind the likes of Borja Mayoral, Lorenzo Pellegrini and even ex-Barcelona veteran Pedro in the pecking order.

However, it does not appear to deter Newcastle United, who value Perez due to his technical brilliance and versatility. He can indeed play on both flanks and even in a false nine position that should make him an ideal alternative for Joelinton or Ryan Fraser.

Carles Perez is not Newcastle’s only option, though. In fact, the Magpies are reportedly in contention to sign former Arsenal superstar Aaron Ramsey who is determined to return to England, following two disappointing years at Juventus. He should be an immediate upgrade over the Roma attacker, even though the Welshman is a more centrally oriented player who will primarily compete with Miguel Almiron.
