Transfer News: Everton offered chance to sign Salomon Rondon

Everton have reportedly been offered a chance to sign former Newcastle United forward Salomon Rondon in the ongoing transfer window.

According to a report from Turkish journalist Ekrem Konur, Premier League outfit Everton have been offered the services of Venezuelan striker Salomon Rondon, who currently plays for Chinese Super League outfit Dalian Professional.

Rondon spent four years of his career in England, having arrived at West Bromwich Albion from Zenit St. Petersburg in the summer of 2015. After spending three seasons with the Baggies, the 31-year-old had a one-year loan stint with Newcastle United before he departed to China in the summer of 2019.

However, with the financial situation in the CSL not as healthy as before due to the pandemic, clubs are looking to terminate contracts of big players, with Rondon, too, facing the possibility of that happening, The Sun reported last week. And now, Ekrem Konur has claimed that the Venezuelan striker has been offered to Everton.

The Toffees could use with a new centre-forward this summer in order to provide cover for star striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin. Moise Kean is staring at an uncertain future at Goodison Park while Cenk Tosun does not feature in the plans of new manager Rafael Benitez either, leaving them with no backup for Calvert-Lewin.

Richarlison is perfectly capable of operating in a central role, but has also been linked with an exit, with claims of a reunion with Carlo Ancelotti at Real Madrid refusing to go away. Irrespective of whether the Brazilian stays or leaves, Everton need a new centre-forward, making Rondon a viable target.

While he might not be the most prolific goalscorers going around, the 31-year-old boasts of valuable experience in the Premier League. In addition, Rondon is familiar with Benitez’s tactics and methods, having worked with the Spanish tactician at Newcastle United as well as Dalian Professional.

Indeed, in 61 appearances under the tutelage of the new Everton manager, Rondon has scored 26 goals and set up 14 more. If he is able to reproduce similar numbers at Goodison Park, he could prove to be a valuable backup option for the Toffees.

What now remains to be seen is whether do take up the opportunity to sign the Venezuelan international or look at alternatives, with Manchester United’s Anthony Martial also being mooted as a transfer target.
