Transfer News: Tottenham join race to sign Philippe Coutinho

Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly keen on signing Brazilian midfielder Philippe Coutinho from Barcelona in the ongoing transfer window.

According to a report by Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo, Philippe Coutinho is the subject of interest from Tottenham Hotspur over a move in the summer transfer window. In fact, the Brazilian midfielder’s agent Kia Joorabchian has already contacted Spurs, with Barcelona deeming him to be surplus to requirements.

Philippe Coutinho joined Barcelona from Liverpool in January 2018 and seemed to be an instant hit at Camp Nou. However, while he did impress in the second half of the 2017/18 season, it has all been downhill for the Brazilian international since then, struggling to make any sort of impression.

In fact, the 29-year-old was so poor in the 2018/19 season that he was sent out on loan to Bayern Munich, although he did fare better at the Allianz Arena.

Back at Barcelona last summer, Coutinho endured another difficult campaign, albeit due to a long-term injury that curtailed his participation to a great extent.

This summer, though, Barcelona have reportedly been intent on offloading the Brazilian midfielder, who has been deemed to be surplus to requirements at Camp Nou. So far, the suitors have not been too forthcoming, with only fleeting links with Leicester City, AC Milan and Marseille emerging. However, Tottenham have now entered the race in pursuit of Coutinho.

The interest from Tottenham is intriguing, seeing as Giovani Lo Celso is touted to grow into his role in the team. However, with Dele Alli still facing an uncertain future at the club, it is understandable why Spurs would want to move in on Coutinho.

As per the report, the north Londoners will step up their efforts to secure his services if Harry Kane ends up joining Manchester City, who are ready to spend big on the England captain. And Tottenham have already been approached by the Barcelona misfit’s agent Kia Joorabchian, who is looking to get a summer move engineered.

Despite his struggles at Barcelona, Coutinho could possibly resurrect his career at Tottenham, seeing as he is well versed with the challenges in the Premier League. What now remains to be seen is if Spurs do launch the offensive for the 29-year-old, thereby bringing an end to his nightmare at Barcelona.
