Transfer News: Tottenham open talks to sign Conor Coady

Tottenham have opened preliminary open talks with Wolves over Conor Coady as Nuno Espirito Santo wants to reunite with one of his former leaders.

According to Football Insider, Tottenham are hopeful of a deal for Conor Coady as they have opened preliminary talks with Wolves over a move. The North London side wants to sign at least two senior central defenders this summer to bolster their ranks, while some existing ones could be offloaded before the transfer deadline.

Tottenham spent the better part of the summer chasing a new manager, and after appointing Nuno Espirito Santo, have then chased Atalanta’s Cristian Romero. They also have to deal with the Harry Kane situation as the England captain angles for a move to Manchester City.

Nuno has held meaningful discussions with the club and new technical director Fabio Paratici over the need for central defenders. The Portuguese boss sees his current backline as the problem area and wants Tottenham to bring at least two senior players ahead of next season.

While they are getting close to capturing Romero after Atalanta reportedly accepted their latest offer, Nuno also wants to be reunited with one of his former stars. Conor Coady is the player the Portuguese wants at Tottenham, as he believes in the leadership qualities of the England international.

Signed by Wolves back in 2015 for a modest fee, Coady has cemented his place as one of their leaders in the team. The central defender missed only one Premier League game during Nuno’s three seasons at the Midland club. The Portuguese feels Coady could bring his experience to Spurs and plug necessary gaps at the back.

Tottenham have already let Toby Alderweireld leave the club recently, while they also remain open to offers for Davinson Sanchez and Eric Dier. Those three stars have been central figures in defence for Spurs in the last few years. Their departure will surely leave a huge void to fill, and Nuno wants Coady for this purpose.

Tottenham failed to sign Jules Kounde earlier, who could join London rivals, Chelsea, instead. Bologna’s Takehiro Tomiyasu also remains an important target, although the Japanese star’s involvement in the Olympics delays further development in talks.

As for Coady, the England star brings immense experience and leadership qualities with him. For Tottenham, he will be a very stable signing with Premier League pedigree, something the other targets under Paratici are missing. It remains to be seen if the talks with Wolves lead to something substantial.
