Transfer News: Newcastle United offered chance to sign Mariano Diaz

Newcastle United have reportedly been offered the chance to sign Mariano Diaz from Real Madrid this summer.

According to a report by French outlet Jeunes Footeux, Mariano Diaz could be inching closer to the exit gate at Real Madrid. Newcastle United have been offered the chance to sign the 28-year-old forward, with Los Blancos ready to cut their losses on him.

Mariano Diaz is currently in his second stint with Real Madrid, having been with the club from 2011 to 2017 when he joined Lyon. Following an impressive 2017/18 campaign with Les Gones, the 28-year-old was re-signed by Real Madrid in the summer of 2018.

However, just like his previous stint with the first-team, Mariano has been a rotation option since returning to the Spanish capital, managing just 47 appearances in three seasons. Over his two spells with Real Madrid, the player has featured 62 times for the Merengues, raking in a tally of 11 goals and two assists along the way.

However, Mariano has been deemed to be surplus to requirements at Real Madrid, who are in the market for an attacking reinforcement, with Carlo Ancelotti keen on reuniting with Richarlison, while Los Blancos wait to get an opening in pursuit of Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe.

As for Mariano, he has been briefly linked with Atletico Madrid, but Newcastle United could well be the next destination for the Real Madrid forward. The Premier League outfit have indeed been offered the chance to sign the 28-year-old.

The Magpies are likely to be in the market for a striker this summer, having seen Andy Carroll exit St. James’ Park as a free agent while Yoshinori Muto is being linked with a move to Vissel Kobe. So while Callum Wilson has been impressive since arriving from Bournemouth, having another option in Mariano would not hurt Newcastle.

Mariano’s versatility would be an added positive as well for the Premier League club, although his €4 million-a-year wages are proving to be problematic. Hence, Newcastle are not prioritising a move for Mariano just yet. However, it will be interesting to see if the Real Madrid striker is ready to take a pay cut to make his way to the Premier League this summer.
