Transfer News: West Ham eyeing Matheus Pereira as Jesse Lingard alternative

West Ham United are reportedly ready to move on from Jesse Lingard as they plot a summer swoop for West Bromwich Albion playmaker Matheus Pereira.

According to an exclusive report from Claret & Hugh, West Ham United have set their sights on Matheus Pereira, as David Moyes looks to move on from his top summer target Jesse Lingard. The Hammers have already made the initial approach for the 25-year-old West Bromwich Albion playmaker, although there has not been much progress in negotiations.

The East Londoners were initially expected to sign Lingard, following his highly successful loan stint during the second half of last season. The Manchester United ace enjoyed unprecedented success, being directly involved in as many as 14 goals in just 16 appearances. His contributions in the final third were critical in helping West Ham secure Europa League football by finishing sixth.

Lingard’s performances also compelled David Moyes to go after the Englishman in the summer. However, last month it was reported that the midfielder is keen on remaining at Old Trafford. And that idea could soon be a reality, as his father is reportedly conducting negotiations over a potential contract extension. His current deal at Manchester United expires at the end of next season.

Manchester United are perhaps open to keeping hold of Lingard in light of the uncertain future of Juan Mata. The Spaniard is already in the final phase of his career, with the Red Devils now even ready to include him in a player plus cash deal for the latest target Goncalo Guedes.

On the other hand, West Ham are now looking at a potential move for Pereira, their desired alternative for Lingard. The 25-year-old Brazilian has not been as successful as the Englishman, but he was certainly one of the bright sparks in an otherwise dire campaign for West Brom last term.

In just 33 Premier League matches, Pereira scored 11 goals while chipping in with six assists, making him one of the most productive players in the bottom half of the table. The West Brom playmaker has made quite an impression with his dynamism and productivity in the final third.

The Brazilian has experience playing in the Championship as well, mustering 77 appearances since joining the club in 2019. On that note, West Brom’s relegation from the Premier League last term makes Matheus Pereira quite a attainable target, but with other clubs also likely to jump in, West Ham need to be swift in their move for the 25-year-old.
