Transfer News: Barcelona weighing up loan move for Donny van de Beek

Barcelona are reportedly interested in Donny van de Beek and could make a proposal for a loan move for the Manchester United midfielder.

According to a report by Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo, Donny van de Beek is the subject of interest from Barcelona over a move in the summer transfer window. The Manchester United could be on his way to Camp Nou soon, with the Catalan giants considering a potential loan move.

Donny van de Beek joined Manchester United from Ajax last summer, arriving at Old Trafford as the Red Devils’ marquee signing of the window. However, the 2020/21 season ended up being one to forget for the Dutch midfielder, who has gone from being a mainstay for Ajax to a bit-part player for the Red Devils.

While he turned out 36 times in all competitions, van de Beek managed only 15 starts, which is a paltry figure considering Manchester United played 61 games last term. It also came with a decline at international level, with van de Beek losing his spot as a regular for the Dutch national side. But, it has not deterred potential big-name suitors, with Barcelona interested in signing him.

It is no longer a secret that Barcelona are in the market for a midfielder this summer, and for good reason. Miralem Pjanic and Philippe Coutinho are reportedly surplus to requirements at Camp Nou while the future of one of last season’s breakout stars, Ilaix Moriba is uncertain, amid a contract standoff as well as links with Manchester United.

Therefore, it is hardly surprising that Barcelona wish to sign a central midfielder this summer, with Georginio Wijnaldum being their initial target. However, the former Liverpool midfielder chose to join Paris Saint-Germain instead, and the Blaugrana have now turned their attention towards his compatriot Donny van de Beek.

The 24-year-old is not the only midfielder being heavily linked with Barcelona, who have also been keen on signing Saul Niguez, who is reportedly also the subject of interest from Manchester United. As for van de Beek, Barcelona are weighing up one of two options to secure his services.

The Catalan outfit could either offer Samuel Umtiti as part of the deal to sign van de Beek or offer a loan deal for the Dutch international. A loan move could work well for all parties involved as Barcelona will not have to spend much amid a financial crisis while Manchester United could get a chance to assess van de Beek’s progress. An intriguing summer beckons the 24-year-old midfielder.
