Transfer News: Arsenal in transfer tussle for Teun Koopmeiners

Arsenal are reportedly among a bevy of clubs that are keen on signing 23-year-old Dutch international Teun Koopmeiners this summer.

According to a report by Dutch publication De Telegraaf, Teun Koopmeiners is the subject of interest from Arsenal over a move in the summer transfer window. The Premier League giants are one among a number of clubs that are showing an interest in the 23-year-old Dutch international.

Teun Koopmeiners joined AZ Alkmaar in 2009 before subsequently making swift progress in the Dutch club’s youth setup. The young midfielder broke into the Kaaskoppen’s first-team squad in 2017, and he has not looked back since, even being promoted to the role of club captain while also becoming a full-fledged Dutch international.

To date, the 23-year-old has made 150 appearances for AZ while chipping in with a solid tally of 43 goals and 17 assists. The midfielder’s progress has certainly not gone unnoticed, with a gamut of top clubs across Europe hot on his trails. Among his potential suitors, Arsenal are also keenly following his progress at AZ and are hoping to land him this summer.

Arsenal might have only confirmed one signing so far this summer but have been extremely active in the transfer market. Midfield, in particular, appears to be an area the Gunners are focusing on to improve their squad level, with the eagerness also well informed because Lucas Torreira and Granit Xhaka are looking to depart the Emirates.

If both the players leave Arsenal, Mikel Arteta will have Thomas Partey and Mohamed Elneny as the only central midfield options at his disposal, which is why it is important they sign at least one replacement for Xhaka and Torreira. To that end, Arsenal have been heavily linked with Manuel Locatelli.

In addition, Ruben Neves is also a key target for Arsenal, who are reportedly set to confirm the arrival of Albert Sambi Lokonga as well. And Koopmeiners is a viable target as well, although the north Londoners are battling the likes of Atalanta, AS Roma, Rennes and Brighton & Hove Albion for his services.

However, Arsenal do have an advantage in pursuit of the 23-year-old, who is a boyhood Gunners fan. What now remains to be seen is if Arsenal can make good on such an advantage or if they are forced to turn their attention elsewhere in search of a midfield reinforcement this summer.
