Takehiro Tomiyasu, who was once linked with Manchester United, is reportedly set to join Tottenham in a £15 million deal this summer.
According to a report by The Athletic, Tottenham Hotspur have inched closer to signing Takehiro Tomiyasu in a £15 million deal in the summer transfer window. The 22-year-old Japanese international was also once linked with Manchester United, who are focusing on other targets now.
Takehiro Tomiyasu has come a long way since joining Bologna from Sint-Truiden in the summer of 2019. A regular feature for the Serie A outfit, the Japanese defender has gone on to amass 63 appearances for the club while chipping in with three goals and as many assists.
The 22-year-old has also been extremely impressive with his versatility, as he can play as a centre-back and a right-back equally adeptly. Therefore, it is hardly surprising that Tomiyasu has been noticed by some of the biggest clubs in Europe, with Manchester United and Tottenham, in particular, being heavily linked with him.
Tottenham have now become clear leaders in the race to sign Tomiyasu, with Manchester United instead keeping their focus firmly on Raphael Varane. And as per The Athletic, Spurs appear to have inched closer to securing the services of the young defender on a £15 million deal.
Tomiyasu will be the first signing of the summer transfer window for Tottenham and also their first since the appointment of Fabio Paratici as the new Managing Director of Football, with his knowledge of Serie A shining through in the pursuit of the Japan international. And the interest from the north Londoners does make sense as well.
Toby Alderweireld is expected to call it quits at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this summer after reportedly expressing his desire to leave the club. The veteran Belgian defender is also on the wrong side of 30 and needed to be phased out soon enough anyway. If that was not enough, the blow-hot-blow-cold nature of Eric Dier and Davinson Sanchez’s performances are reason enough to sign a new central defender.
It now looks like Tomiyasu will soon be at Tottenham, who are ironing out the final details of the transfer with Bologna. The £15 million fee will not be the only payment made by Spurs, who would also be liable to pay add-ons as and when they come into play. What now remains to be seen is if the Premier League heavyweights can close out a deal quickly as they look to kick-start their transformation this summer.
