Transfer News: Tottenham keen on signing Matthew Hoppe

Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly exploring the possibility of signing Schalke 20-year-old American prodigy Matthew Hoppe this summer.

According to an exclusive report from 90 min, Matthew Hoppe is closing in on a potential move to the Premier League. The 20-year-old Schalke forward has attracted many suitors from England, with Tottenham Hotspur among the clubs exploring the possibility of a summer switch to north London.

Schalke are expected to cash in on Hoppe in the summer as they look to recover from a financial crisis brought upon by the pandemic and, indeed, their relegation from the Bundesliga last season. It remains unknown as to how much the Royal Blues may demand for the services of their prized asset, but Tottenham are set to face stiff competition from Southampton, Wolves and Newcastle United.

A native of California, Hoppe has had a rapid rise to prominence since his move to Germany in 2019. He made his mark in the Bundesliga, in the 4-0 win over Hoffenheim, with the American forward netting a hat-trick. The 20-year-old went on to score six goals in 22 matches for Schalke, although it was not enough to prevent Die Konigsblauen from getting relegated.

Hoppe is regarded as a fox in the box, a true poacher who tends to utilise his pace to get in behind the opposition lines. It appears Tottenham are scouting the American prodigy as a potential replacement for Harry Kane, who is tipped to leave the club.

The Englishman has already been linked with a move to Chelsea and Manchester City this summer. And his potential departure could create a massive void in Tottenham’s attacking unit.

As such, Tottenham’s new managing director of football Fabio Paratici is ready to scour the market for a potential long-term replacement. In fact, Hoppe is not the only forward plying their trade in Germany that Spurs are targeting this summer, with the club also being linked with a move for VfL Wolfsburg’s Wout Weghorst.

Haris Seferovic has emerged as another option for Tottenham, although it will be surprising to see the Swiss international join the north London giants in the summer.

As for Hoppe, his future likely resides in England as the young American hopes to make the next step in his career. There are no shortage of suitors in Germany, but the 20-year-old forward might just favour a move to Premier League in an attempt to prove himself and become his nation’s leading frontman in the upcoming FIFA World Cup next year.
