Transfer News: Manchester United told to pay €60 million to sign Cristian Romero

Manchester United have reportedly been asked to cough up €60 million to secure the services of 23-year-old Argentine international Cristian Romero.

According to a report by Italian outlet Calciomercato, Manchester United will need to pay the big bucks to sign Cristian Romero in the summer transfer window. The Premier League heavyweights have been quoted a price-tag of €60 million for the Argentine international, who is also a target for Tottenham Hotspur and Barcelona.

Cristian Romero joined Juventus from Genoa in the summer of 2019 but is yet to feature even once for the Bianconeri. With the Turin giants brimming with central defensive options, Romero has had to suffice with loan spells away from the Allianz Stadium. And it is after joining Atalanta last summer that the 23-year-old has blossomed into one of the best young defenders in Europe.

A productive campaign with La Dea saw Romero rack up 42 appearances while chipping in with three goals and five assists along the way. The player’s progress has helped him break into the Argentine national side while prompting Atalanta to seriously consider the option of buying him this summer. Also lurking in pursuit of the youngster are Manchester United.

It is no secret that Manchester United wish to bolster their defence this summer, with the links with Raphael Varane being quite prominent. However, recent reports have suggested that the Red Devils are keeping their options open in case they are unable to land their priority defensive target this summer.

To that end, Manchester United have the likes of Pau Torres, Jules Kounde and Joachim Andersen in their sights, with Romero a viable target as well. However, swooping the 23-year-old away from Atalanta – provided the Bergamo-based club trigger their option to sign him permanently – will cost the English giants a pretty penny.

Atalanta are likely to demand €60 million to part ways with Romero, who is also being courted by Tottenham and Barcelona. While a massive profit on their outlay on the Argentine international does represent a good piece of business amid financial issues borne out of coronavirus pandemic, selling the best defender in Serie A last term might not be prudent from a sporting perspective.

Nevertheless, it looks like Romero is garnering interest from some of the biggest clubs in Europe in the summer transfer window. As far as Manchester United are concerned, it will be interesting to see if they fork out €60 million to secure the services of the 23-year-old.
