Manchester United are reportedly still retaining an interest in Brazilian prodigy Gabriel Veron, even as Serie A club Sassuolo plot a move for the Palmeiras ace.
According to a report from Il Resto Del Carlino, Manchester United still remain in the fray for the potential signing of Palmeiras’ teenage forward Gabriel Veron, who is attracting serious interest from Serie A outfit Sassuolo.
The 18-year-old Veron came through the youth ranks at the Brazilian outfit before breaking into the first-team in the early parts of 2020, swiftly carving out quite the reputation for himself. In 40 senior appearances so far, the versatile has racked up eleven goals and five assists, with his performances in the Copa Libertadores last year particularly catching the eye of the onlookers.
Prior to him bursting out at club level, Veron had already put scouts from across the world on high alert after his exploits in the 2019 FIFA Under-17 World Cup. The winger registered three goals and three assists, leading Brazil to the trophy, and was also awarded the Golden Ball for the tournament.
Veron’s rise to prominence in South America hasn’t gone unnoticed, with Manchester United having been linked quite frequently with him in the recent past. And while the speculations seemed to have cooled down of late, it seems like the 20-time English champions still maintain an interest in the teenager, as per the aforementioned report.
Manchester United have focused on strengthening the roster with youth under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, as has been seen by their recent acquisitions of Daniel James, Amad Diallo, Facundo Pellistri and more recently, Jadon Sancho, who should be complete his transfer once the UEFA Euro 2020 is out of the way.
Each of the aforementioned quartet play on the right flank, which is Veron’s primary position. However, the Brazilian has shown that he can play with equal comfort on the left or through the centre as well, which would bolster Manchester United’s attacking options in the long term, especially with Anthony Martial’s future at the club being called into question.
The report adds that Serie A club Sassuolo are also keen on signing Veron and are plotting an opening offer for the teenage forward. While he is said to have a release clause worth €50 million, the Italians are hoping to offer a sum of €15 million plus add-ons to convince Palmeiras to part ways with their 18-year-old prodigy.
But it also mentions that should Manchester United decide to formalise their interest in Veron, Sassuolo will have minimal chances of signing Veron in the summer. So, as things stand, the Red Devils remain admirers of the Brazilian, but it remains to be seen if they are ready to act on their interest in him this summer.
