Leeds United are closing in on the capture of Wigan Athletic whizkid Sean McGurk, who is expected to cost around £175,000.
According to The Times journalist Paul Joyce, Leeds United have significant progress in the pursuit of Sean McGurk. A transfer worth around £175,000 is being discussed, although neither of the sides are yet to come to an agreement. The move might soon be settled by a tribunal, as the Premier League outfit close in on another summer signing.
A product of the Liverpool youth academy, McGurk has shown a lot of promise since moving to Wigan in 2016. The attacking midfielder has been playing for the Wigan U18 for the past couple of years, impressing the onlookers with his chance creation and skill going forward.
McGurk is yet to make his professional debut with Wigan, having only featured in the youth leagues and FA Youth Cup this past season. He is nevertheless regarded as a talented prospect who is more than capable of thriving at the highest level of football.
Leeds United are no stranger to poaching talents either, notably signing one of Wigan’s most prized young talents in Joe Gelhardt last summer. The forward made quite an impact as well, notching up 11 goals in Premier League 2 before being promoted to the senior side.
Gelhardt is currently serving as the backup for Patrick Bamford and Rodrigo Moreno. He is yet to make his Premier League debut but is tipped to gain a prominent role in Marcelo Bielsa’s setup in the upcoming campaign.
Leeds United will be hoping for a similar success with the 18-year-old McGurk. The attacking midfielder could be an excellent addition to the club’s EDS squad that mesmerised the Premier League 2 last season while producing talented stars like Joe Gelhardt and Sam Greenwood.
With Pablo Hernandez leaving the club in the summer, McGurk may even have an outside chance of pushing for next season’s senior side. However, the Whites are primarily keeping an eye on more proven options like Noni Madueke of PSV Eindhoven, whereas Nahitan Nandez has been strongly linked with a switch to Elland Road.
It is indeed an interesting summer ahead of the Yorkshire giants as they look to add more quality to their ranks before pushing for a European spot in the upcoming campaign.
