Barcelona are reportedly set to make a move for 21-year-old Sampdoria forward Mikkel Damsgaard, who could cost up to €50 million.
According to a report by Italian publication Tuttosport, the race to sign Mikkel Damsgaard in the summer transfer window is intensifying. Barcelona are among a bevy of clubs ready to make a move for the 21-year-old Danish forward, with Sampdoria valuing him between €30 million and €50 million.
Mikkel Damsgaard has taken no time to establish himself as one of the most promising up-and-coming forwards in Europe’s top five leagues, having joined Sampdoria from Nordsjaelland last summer. The 21-year-old might have only produced a tally of two goals and four assists in 37 games for the Serie A outfit last season but impressed with his performance levels on the pitch.
His stock has only continued to rise further at UEFA Euro 2020, where he has been one of the star performers in what has been a phenomenal campaign for Denmark, who have reached the semi-finals this week by beating Czech Republic. The continuous rise in stature has invariably piqued the interest of some of the biggest clubs in the world, with Barcelona among his suitors.
The interest from Barcelona is hardly surprising, considering the likes of Francisco Trincao and Ousmane Dembele are facing an uncertain future at Camp Nou this summer. If either or both of the players end up leaving, the Blaugrana would need to sign at least one replacement, as the other’s departure could be mitigated by Memphis Depay’s arrival.
As a result, the interest in Damsgaard makes sense, with the 21-year-old potentially being a solution for midfield as well as attack. Indeed, the Danish international is capable of playing across the attacking line but also in midfield. And with Barcelona in the market for a midfielder, signing Damsgaard could well be the way to go to avoid some extra expenditure.
However, Damsgaard appears to be set to be the subject of a transfer battle, with several other clubs in addition to Barcelona keen on signing as well. Sampdoria currently value Damsgaard between €30 million and €50 million, but his fee could well reach the upper limit if an auction ensues in the coming weeks.
For now, the race to sign the 21-year-old from Sampdoria is heating up and it looks like it is only a matter of time before he joins one of the biggest teams in Europe. For now, Barcelona are among a glut of clubs set to make a move for Damsgaard and it will be interesting to see if leave the Serie A outfit this summer.
