Transfer News: Manchester United reach agreement with Real Madrid for Raphael Varane

Manchester United and Real Madrid have reportedly reached ‘complete agreement’ over the transfer of French defender Raphael Varane this summer.

According to a report from El Chiringuito TV, Real Madrid and Manchester United have a complete agreement in place over the summer transfer of World Cup-winning defender Raphael Varane.

Varane has been with Real Madrid since 2011, having signed as a promising teenager from French club RC Lens. During his decade-long stint at the Spanish capital club, the 28-year-old has grown into one of the most accomplished and successful centre-backs of the modern game, winning everything there is to be won at club level with Los Blancos.

Varane, who also won the FIFA World Cup with France in 2018, though, is now seeking a new challenge in his career. The Frenchman is out of contract in just a little over a year, and with negotiations over a new deal not proving fruitful, Real Madrid risk losing him for nothing in the summer of 2022. And, it seems like they are now ready to cash in on him, with Manchester United ready to swoop in.

Manchester United’s interest in Varane is not new. The 28-year-old was a target for the Red Devils before his move to Real Madrid and has since continued to be linked with them on numerous occasions through his stint in Spain. This time out, though, the 20-time English champions may well be closing in on signing the Frenchman.

Manchester United’s need for a new centre-back signing isn’t unfounded either. Both Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly have not been nearly consistent enough throughout their respective spells at Old Trafford, whereas long-serving defender Phil Jones does not have a future at the club. In addition, Axel Tuanzebe could also be set for a loan stint away, making the addition of a new centre-half a priority addition for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

While there have been several names linked with a move to Old Trafford, Varane seems to be the one that Manchester United have narrowed in on. The Mancunian outfit are believed to have had an offer already turned down by Real Madrid, but things may have now taken a turn for the better, as the aforementioned report claims that the two clubs have reached ‘complete agreement’ over a summer transfer for the Frenchman.

If true, this will be a huge boost for Manchester United in the aftermath of reports that they are closing in on the signing of Jadon Sancho. It now remains to be seen if the Red Devils can agree personal terms with the 2018 World Cup winner and secure his transfer before the onset of the 2021/22 campaign.
