Transfer News: Liverpool submit enquiry for Kylian Mbappe

Real Madrid are set to face competition from Liverpool for PSG superstar Kylian Mbappe, with the Reds already lodging an enquiry with the French outfit.

According to a report from Spanish publication MARCA, Liverpool are ready to give Real Madrid a run for their money in the race to sign Paris Saint-Germain superstar Kylian Mbappe this summer.

The 22-year-old Mbappe has been one of the most coveted forwards across Europe ever since his spectacular breakthrough season with AS Monaco in 2016/17. Following that stellar campaign, the Frenchman moved to PSG, initially on loan, before the transfer was made permanent in 2018.

During his time in Paris, the attacker has cemented his status as one of the most talented young players in the game currently, producing prolific numbers year after year. Indeed, Mbappe has already plundered 132 goals in just 171 games for Les Parisiens, 42 of which came in the 2020/21 campaign from only appearances.

Mbappe, for quite a few years now, has been heavily linked with a transfer to Real Madrid. The Merengues have held a long-standing interest in the 2018 FIFA World Cup winner, and with his contract with PSG expiring in a year, the time seems right for Florentino Perez & co. to launch a swoop for the 22-year-old forward.

Given how over-reliant Real Madrid have been on Karim Benzema in the past couple of seasons, the investment would be more than justified as well. Mbappe can provide much better support to his compatriot than the likes of Marco Asensio, Vinicius Junior, or even Eden Hazard have been doing so far, before eventually replacing Benzema as the main striker of the team.

To that end, it has even been claimed that Real Madrid already have an agreement in place to capture the signing of Mbappe. However, they might be set to face competition from Premier League giants Liverpool for the transfer of the prodigious 22-year-old this summer.

The Reds are in need of injecting fresh blood into their attack due to Roberto Firmino’s lack of goals, while Sadio Mane also endured a sub-par campaign in the season gone by. So, signing someone like Mbappe would offer Jurgen Klopp a brilliant solution to their attacking unit for the years to come, which is why Liverpool have now lodged an enquiry with PSG for the Frenchman.

PSG, though, remain insistent that Mbappe is not for sale despite his current contract situation. Should he decide not to pen an extension, the 22-year-old would be able to leave on a free transfer next year, which the French giants must be wary of.

As for Liverpool, the report adds that any move for him would only be possible if they offload either Mane or fellow star attacker Mohamed Salah in the summer. So, they are likely to prefer to wait till his contract runs out to make a move. However, as things stand, Real Madrid may have the upper hand as Mbappe is said to be desiring a switch to the Bernabeu. It will be interesting to see how this transfer saga develops in the coming weeks.
