Transfer News: Arsenal make approach for Jesus Corona

Arsenal have reportedly made an approach for Porto star Jesus Corona, as Mikel Arteta seeks options in the attack to replace Willian.

According to ABC Sevilla, as relayed by Sport Witness, Arsenal might be interested in signing FC Porto winger Jesus Corona this summer. It’s a well-known fact that Arsenal are looking at several options to bolster their roster, with Corona believed to be one of them. The Mexican midfielder believes it’s time for him to take a step up to move onto bigger clubs.

Arsenal are in the market for a forward-minded player, and thus far, there have been links to a few names across Europe. Mikel Arteta is intent on strengthening his options in the No.10 role, with Martin Odegaard his preferred choice. The Norwegian played through the centre as well as on the right side of the attack while on loan from Real Madrid last term.

With Odegaard increasingly looking like staying in Spain, Arsenal also lost out to Aston Villa in the chase for Emiliano Buendia earlier. That leaves Arteta looking around for players who might provide a spark in attack, especially with chance-creation and assists.

With Willian proving to be a major dud since arriving from Chelsea last summer, Arteta could be looking at Corona to replace him, considering the Brazilian made plenty of appearances last season. Corona provided 13 assists in all competitions for Porto last season while scoring three times as well.

The Mexican could be someone that can come in and be a squad player, if not a surefire starter, right away. To that end, Arsenal have approached his representatives, although Corona is reportedly interested in a move to Sevilla, with the Spanish side keen on swooping the 28-year-old. However, Sevilla do not have the funds at this moment to make significant transfers possible, making a deal difficult to pus through.

Corona has a €25 million release clause in his contract with Porto, which is valid until July 15th, meaning any suitors, Arsenal or Sevilla, may have to pay more than that sum once the deadline passes. Aware of this situation, Corona, along with his agents, is weighing up his options apart from Arsenal and Sevilla.

A price increase could make it difficult for Corona to move elsewhere after the release clause deadline. €25 million right now might sound reasonable, although it is still proving difficult for the likes of Sevilla. As for Arsenal, they only have Corona as an option and not part of their priority list. It remains to be seen if the Gunners further their interest by making an offer, which is expected to be below the asking price in all likeliness.
