Real Madrid could reportedly make a move for Inter Milan’s Slovakian defender Milan Skriniar if either Sergio Ramos or Raphael Varane end up leaving.
According to a report from Spanish outlet Fichajes, La Liga heavyweights Real Madrid could make a play to sign Inter Milan and Slovakia star Milan Skriniar in the summer transfer window.
Skriniar started out at the academy of MSK Zilina in Slovakia before moving to Italy in January 2016 when he signed for Sampdoria. During his time with the club, the defender made a solid impression, prompting Inter Milan to invest in him eighteen months later in the summer of 2017. Ever since, the 26-year-old has grown into one of the most reliable centre-backs in Serie A.
To date, Skriniar has amassed 167 appearances for the Nerazzurri, contributing with seven goals as well. While the Slovakian international flitted in and out of the lineup in the early parts of Antonio Conte’s tenure at the club during 2019/20, last season was a different story altogether as the centre-back was a permanent fixture in the backline, playing a key role in Inter Milan’s Serie A triumph after eleven years.
Following a strong ending to his club season, Skriniar has carried that form into the UEFA Euro 2020. He played a starring role in Slovakia’s shock 2-1 win over Poland, scoring the winning goal while keeping Robert Lewandowski in check. Impressed by his form and leadership, Real Madrid could now launch a move for the 26-year-old, as per the report.
Real Madrid need defensive reinforcements this summer as Sergio Ramos and Raphael Varane seem destined for the exit doors. The former’s contract runs out at the end of the month and is yet to agree terms on a new deal. The latter, meanwhile, is entering the final year of his deal with Los Blancos and is seeking a new challenge, with PSG and Manchester United in the hunt for his signing.
Three potential destinations for Real Madrid star Raphael Varane | THT Opinions
David Alaba has already arrived at Real Madrid on a free transfer from Bayern Munich, and as he has shown over the past few years, he is more than capable of performing as a centre-back. But bringing in another centre-half could be critical for Carlo Ancelotti & co., especially if they end up losing both Ramos and Varane this summer.
To that end, Real Madrid have been linked with numerous centre-backs of late, including Sevilla’s Jules Kounde and Pau Torres of Villarreal, while Skriniar’s name has also been mentioned in the recent past. And, it seems like they could be willing to move for the Slovakian if any of their frontline defenders end up leaving the club this summer.
Given Inter Milan’s financial difficulties, a significant offer for Skriniar could force them into considering the prospect of a sale. However, it now remains to be seen if Real Madrid decide to firm up their interest in the 26-year-old Slovakian international.
