Manchester United are reportedly closely monitoring 26-year-old Aston Villa midfielder John McGinn ahead of the summer transfer window.
According to The Athletic, John McGinn is the subject of interest from Manchester United over a potential move in the summer transfer window. The 26-year-old Aston Villa midfielder is being tracked by the Premier League heavyweights, with technical director Darren Fletcher holding him in high regard.
McGinn joined Aston Villa from Hibernian FC in the summer of 2018 and has since been one of the better performers for the Midlands club. The Scottish international played a key role in the Villans’ 2018/19 campaign, wherein they secured promotion to the Premier League. And, in the last couple of seasons, he has been a figure of consistency in the top-flight.
To date, McGinn has amassed 111 appearances for Aston Villa, chipping in with 13 goals and 19 assists in the process. His progress since arriving in England has definitely not gone unnoticed, with Manchester United among the clubs that have kept a keen eye on how he has fared in the Premier League.
Manchester United could have to dip their toes in the transfer market in the summer transfer window for a midfielder, as the future of Paul Pogba is not exactly secure. In addition, Nemanja Matic is on the wrong side of 30 and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has started phasing him out of the first-team plans gradually.
In order to bolster their midfield department, Manchester United have been linked with Barcelona youngster Ilaix Moriba. And, McGinn is the latest midfielder to have popped up on the radar of the record Premier League champions, with technical director Darren Fletcher holding him in high regard.
Apart from McGinn, Manchester United are also showing an interest in another Premier League midfielder in Harry Winks. As for the 26-year-old Aston Villa star, the Red Devils are simply keeping tabs on him for now and it will be interesting to see if it evolves into anything serious.
It is likely that Manchester United will only make a move for McGinn this summer if Pogba ends up calling it quits at Old Trafford. It now remains to be seen if Manchester United are forced to launch the offensive for a midfielder ahead of the 2021/22 season.
