Manchester United are reportedly working on a deal to swoop French defender Raphael Varane away from Real Madrid this summer.

According to a report by Daily Mail, Manchester United have stepped up their efforts to sign Raphael Varane in the summer transfer window. The Premier League heavyweights are working on a deal to prise the 28-year-old defender away from Real Madrid ahead of the 2021/22 season.

Varane has been moulded into one of the best defenders in the game since he joined Real Madrid from RC Lens in the summer of 2011. Over the past decade, the French international has grown leaps and bounds to become a mainstay at the back for both club and country. And, along the way, he has also won just about every trophy he has contested for in his career.

Till date, Varane has amassed 360 appearances for Real Madrid, even chipping in with 17 goals and 7 assists. However, his future in the Spanish capital appears to be bleak, with widespread reports suggesting that he is unlikely to pen a new contract with Los Blancos, with his current deal set to run out in just over a year’s time. Such a situation has kicked Manchester United into action.

Manchester United hold a long-standing interest in Varane, having made previous attempts to sign the 28-year-old from Real Madrid. However, amid a potential contract stand-off, which could force the Merengues to cash in on him, this summer represents the perfect opportunity for the Red Devils to land their key central defensive target.

The interest from Manchester United makes a great deal of sense as well, considering Eric Bailly and Victor Lindelof have flattered to deceive on one too many occasion. In addition, both the centre-backs have struggled with fitness issues in the past year – or longer in Bailly’s case – which is why it is imperative that Manchester United sign a central defender.

In fact, there have been suggestions that Manchester United are in advanced talks to sign Varane, who might be open to switch to Old Trafford as well. And now, the Red Devils have stepped up their efforts to land their priority defensive target, with Daily Mail claiming that they are working on a deal to prise him away from Real Madrid.

In fact, Manchester United are reportedly ready to hike his wages considerably as well, which could further tempt Varane to complete a move this summer. For now, though, a bid appears to be in the works and it remains to be seen if United can quickly reach an agreement with Real Madrid to sign the 2018 FIFA World Cup winner.
