Real Madrid have reached an agreement to sign David Alaba, who will pen a five-year deal with the Merengues this summer.

Real Madrid have made an official statement to confirm that they have secured the services of David Alaba. The versatile Austrian star arrives from Bayern Munich and is set to commit the next fives years to Los Blancos, with his official presentation slated for after the end of the UEFA Euro 2020.

Alaba has established himself as one of the best players in Europe since joining Bayern Munich in 2008. In the past decade or so, the Austrian international has been a player par excellence while also impressing with his versatility, having played as a left-back, a centre-back and a midfielder equally adeptly for the Bundesliga giants.

However, Alaba’s time at the Allianz Arena has come to an end following the expiration of his deal with Bayern Munich, with the 28-year-old having made 431 appearances, while chipping in with 33 goals and 55 assists. His free agent status had invariably piqued the interest of several big name European clubs, and none more so than Real Madrid.

Real Madrid are entering a transitional period following the departure of Zinedine Zidane, with the squad set for a major overhaul. Defence is an area that desperately needs to be addressed, with each of the three positions in need of being bolsters.

As far as the heart of the defence is concerned, Sergio Ramos is currently at loggerheads of the terms of a new deal, with his current contract expiring in the summer transfer window. In addition, Raphael Varane could also be calling it quits at Real Madrid this summer, with a bevy of Premier League clubs keen on signing him.

Alaba, to that end, could be a possible central defensive solution in his peak years while also being an option at left-back and midfield in case the likes of Ferland Mendy, Casemiro and Toni Kroos sustain any injuries. And, for the longest time, it has been suggested that the announcement was a mere formality, with the confirmation being made by Real Madrid.

The Merengues have reached an agreement with Alaba over a five-year deal, with his signing set to be formally completed after the culmination of the UEFA Euro 2020. It will now be interesting to see how the 28-year-old fares at Real Madrid, which is his new home for the next half-a-decade.
