Tottenham Hotspur have parted ways with Jose Mourinho and his staff with immediate effect, with Ryan Mason taking charge of the first-team in the interim.
Tottenham Hotspur have made an official statement that they have relieved Jose Mourinho and his coaching staff of their positions at the club with immediate effect. In the interim, former Spurs midfielder Ryan Mason has will be taking charge of first-team training on Monday.
Jose Mourinho arrived at Tottenham Hotspur in November 2019 after they had parted ways with Mauricio Pochettino, who had been instrumental in turning their fortunes around and establishing them as top four regulars in the Premier League. Mourinho, though, took charge of a side that had been languishing at 14th on the league table and losing hope of Champions League qualification.
By the end of last season, Mourinho had only managed to take Spurs to a sixth-placed finish, which earned them a place in the UEFA Europa League for the ongoing campaign. Things, though, started to go pear-shaped after a strong start to 2020/21, which had even seen Tottenham being perched atop the Premier League standings at a point.
To make matters worse, the north Londoners were booted out of the Europa League by an unheralded Dinamo Zagreb side at the Last 16 stage while their most recent result in the English top-flight – a 2-2 draw with Everton – had left Tottenham dawdling at 7th, with their top four hopes dangling by a thread.

Suffice to say, the pressure had been building on Mourinho for some time, despite his contract with the Premier League heavyweights running through to the end of the 2022/23 season. And, what did seem to be inevitable has now been confirmed by an official statement by Tottenham, who have sacked Mourinho and his coaching staff Joao Sacramento, Nuno Santos, Carlos Lalin and Giovanni Cerra.
Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy said on the decision, “Jose and his coaching staff have been with us through some of our most challenging times as a Club. Jose is a true professional who showed enormous resilience during the pandemic.”
“On a personal level I have enjoyed working with him and regret that things have not worked out as we both had envisaged. He will always be welcome here and we should like to thank him and his coaching staff for their contribution.”
There had been claims that Mourinho’s dismissal after just 17 months in-charge had something to do with the announcement of the controversial European Super League, which has taken the footballing world by storm, Spurs are one of the founding members of the contentious competition, but The Athletic have quashed such suggestions, reporting that his sacking is purely for footballing reasons.
Tottenham are set to face Manchester City in the Carabao Cup final later this week and before then, there is a cloud of uncertainty looming over them. In the interim, though, former midfielder Ryan Mason, who has been working with the club’s academy, will take first-team training on Monday.
