Manchester United are reportedly rivalling Real Madrid in the race to sign Sergej Milinkovic-Savic from Lazio this coming summer.
According to a report by Italian publication Gazzetta Dello Sport, Sergej Milinkovic-Savic is once again starting to become a hot property in the market heading into the summer transfer window. The Lazio midfielder is being chased by the likes of Real Madrid, Manchester United and PSG.
Sergej Milinkovic-Savic has come leaps and bounds since joining Lazio from Genk in the summer of 2015. Now regarded as one of the best midfielders in Serie A, despite blowing hot and cold at times, the 26-year-old has been a mainstay for Lazio over the last half-a-dozen years while also drawing comparisons with Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba for his style of play.
The ongoing season has been a reasonably productive one for the Serbian international, who has a tally of 7 goals and 9 assists in 26 Serie A games. His continued progress has meant that some of the biggest clubs in the world have still been keeping a watchful eye on his performances, with the suitors including Real Madrid and Manchester United.
Real Madrid are approaching a transitional period as far as the shape of their squad is concerned. With several of their core players approaching the twilight years of their respective careers, Los Blancos need to be on the lookout for younger options to refresh Zinedine Zidane’s options. The same goes for midfield, with Luka Modric and Toni Kroos both well into their thirties.
In addition, with Isco also facing an uncertain future at the club, Real Madrid’s need to bolster their midfield is understandable, which is perhaps why they have set their sights on Milinkovic-Savic. As for Manchester United, they are in a precarious situation over the future of Paul Pogba once again.
While recent reports have suggested that Pogba could stay put at Old Trafford, the notorious Mino Raiola continues to stir the pot time and again over his client’s status at the club. On top of that, Nemanja Matic is approaching the end of his illustrious career, having become a bit-part player at Manchester United, who have, in turn, been linked with a number of midfielders, including Lille star Boubakary Soumare.

Milinkovic-Savic, though, will be a like-for-like replacement for Pogba, if the Frenchman calls it quits with the Red Devils. Apart from Real Madrid and Manchester United, PSG have also rekindled their pursuit of the Serb, who could be open to leaving Lazio if they fail to qualify for the UEFA Champions League, as per the report.
That is something that each of the three suitors will likely be able to offer next season, which will put them all in the running for 26-year-old. However, Milinkovic-Savic has previously admitted to his dream of playing for Real Madrid, which might mean that Manchester United and PSG could be trailing the Merengues, though it remains to be seen how the transfer saga develops in the coming months.
