Arsenal have reportedly set their sights on Spanish midfielder Joan Jordan, who has a release clause worth €50 million in his Sevilla deal.
According to a report by Spanish publication MARCA, Joan Jordan is the subject of interest from Arsenal over a possible move in the future. The Gunners are closely monitoring the Spanish midfielder, who has a €50 million buyout clause in his Sevilla contract and is also being tailed by Juventus.
Jordan joined Sevilla from Eibar in the summer of 2019 and has since gone on to establish himself as a key player for the Spanish outfit. Now a mainstay in midfield for Los Nervionenses, the 26-year-old continue to go from strength to strength and is enjoying a memorable 2020/21 campaign.
So far this term, Jordan has 2 goals and 7 assists in 42 appearances across all competitions and his progress has invariably captured the attention of some of the biggest clubs in the world. Chief among these are Arsenal, who have been closely following his development for a few months now.
Arsenal are seemingly keen on bolstering their midfield for a second successive summer and their reasons to do so are not unfounded. While Thomas Partey is likely to be a solution in midfield for a few years to come, Granit Xhaka is the only other consistent central midfielder who will likely be at Mikel Arteta’s disposal come the summer transfer window.
Indeed, Dani Ceballos will return to Real Madrid upon the expiration of his loan deal and there are no guarantees that he will eventually join the Gunners permanently. In addition, Mohamed Elneny is only a squad option for Arsenal while another midfielder, albeit a no. 10, in Martin Odegaard will also return to parent club Real Madrid in the summer.
With such major changes beckoning Arsenal, it is clear why they would want to sign a central midfielder in the summer, with Christopher Nkunku one of their options to play higher up the pitch, although he will be more of a replacement for Odegaard.
Sander Berge is another midfielder who is on Arsenal’s radar, but Jordan would be more of a like-for-like replacement for Ceballos. The Gunners do not even need to negotiate directly with Sevilla to sign the Spanish midfielder, considering he has a €50 million release clause.
However, if Arsenal cannot raise the required €50 million sum, they might need to begin discussions with the La Liga outfit over a summer move. For now, though, Arsenal are simply keeping track of Jordan, who was recently extremely impressive in Sevilla’s win over Atletico Madrid, and is also being chased by Juventus. An intriguing summer beckons.
