Transfer News: Arsenal, Tottenham sounded out over potential Lucas Vazquez swoop

Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly been approached over the possibility of signing Lucas Vazquez from Real Madrid this summer.

According to a report by Daily Mirror, Arsenal and Tottenham have reportedly been sounded out over the prospect of signing Lucas Vazquez in the summer transfer window. The Spanish winger is at loggerheads with Real Madrid over the terms of a new contract.

Lucas Vazquez joined the Real Madrid academy in 2007 and made gradual progress before finally breaking into the first-team setup in 2015, aged 24, having also temporarily joined Espanyol. Since making his debut, the 29-year-old has grown into a reliable customer for Los Blancos, and in the ongoing campaign, he has been one of the best performers in Zinedine Zidane’s side.

A return of 2 goals and 7 assists in 31 appearances across all competitions might not appear to be impressive, but Vazquez has been a key player for the Merengues this term. However, his future at Real Madrid has been mired in uncertainty in recent months, with his current deal set to expire in the summer. And now, Vazquez has been offered to Arsenal and Tottenham.

Arsenal could do with a natural winger on either flank owing to the inconsistencies of Willian and Nicolas Pepe, with Vazquez’s arrival also potentially freeing up Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to play as a central striker more often, even though they have been linked with another striker in Kaio Jorge.

That he will not cost a penny will also appeal to Arsenal, who have operated on a shoestring budget more often than not in recent years. However, the Gunners could face stiff competition from Tottenham in the race to sign Vazquez, if Spurs also respond positively to being approached over a possible deal for the Real Madrid superstar.

At Tottenham, Gareth Bale has touted to possibly join on a permanent transfer in the summer, but in the off-chance the Real Madrid loanee does not make it to the north London club, Vazquez could be a viable alternative considering the creative impetus he provides from the right-wing.

Having previously worked under Jose Mourinho at Real Madrid, Vazquez is open to joining Spurs. The only stumbling block for Arsenal and Tottenham will be the fact that the Spanish international wants to join a club that can offer Champions League football, and with both the clubs outside the top four, that might not be possible.

Meanwhile, Real Madrid, on their part, are keeping their options open, having identified Jorge de Frutos as a possible replacement for Vazquez. However, Zidane wants Vazquez’s future sorted and it will be interesting to see if Real Madrid do retain his services or if Arsenal or Tottenham end up making a move for him after being sounded out over a possible move.
