Manchester United have reportedly set their sights on Tyrone Mings over a possible move in the summer transfer window.
According to a report by ESPN, Tyrone Mings features on a shortlist of centre-backs that Manchester United have drawn up. The Premier League heavyweights are intent on bolstering their defensive line in the summer transfer window, with a number of other top defenders also on their radar.
Tyrone Mings is one of the many success stories of players bred in the lower divisions of English football before they established their foothold in the Premier League. The 27-year-old started his professional career at Yale Town and represented Chippenham Town and Ipswich Town before reaching the Premier League with Bournemouth.
However, it is at Aston Villa where the Englishman has gone on to make his name, having been regarded as one of the best centre-backs in the Premier League at present. Till date, Mings has turned out 75 times for the Midlands clubs, for whom he is a defensive mainstay. His performances have caught the attention of Manchester United.
It is being widely reported that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is set to prioritise the addition of a centre-back in the summer transfer window, and for good reason. While captain Harry Maguire has recovered from a slow start to the season, reflecting the Red Devils’ collective progress this term, there are legitimate concerns over Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly.
While both Lindelof and Bailly have been impressive at times in the ongoing campaign, their fitness woes have heaped the pressure on Maguire, meaning Manchester United have been plunged into the transfer market for a centre-back. To that end, Jules Kounde is one of the players who could be subject to a bid in the summer.
In addition, Manchester United also have Raphael Varane in their sights, with Mings now being viewed as a possible target as well. In fact, the report claims that Mings features alongside Kounde, Varane and David Carmo on United’s shortlist of centre-backs ahead of the summer.
It is not clear who among the four will become the priority target for the Premier League giants, but what does appear to be certain is that a centre-back is likely to arrive at Old Trafford this summer. What now remains to be seen is if that one defender ends up being Mings, or if one of the other three centre-backs end up joining the club instead.
