Real Madrid have reportedly set their sights on Lucas Hernandez over a move in the summer, as they seek to bolster their defence.
According to the Spanish outlet Defensa Central, Lucas Hernandez has popped up on the radar of Real Madrid over a move in the summer transfer window. The French international is open to the prospect of leaving Bayern Munich, having struggled to establish himself as a regular.
Lucas Hernandez joined Bayern Munich from Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2019 and has since been unable to nail down his spot as a regular for the German champions. Rated quite highly after a fruitful spell with Los Rojiblancos, the Frenchman was expected to be an influential addition to the Bavarian giants’ squad.
However, Hernandez has constantly been in and out of the side and this season, he has featured 21 times for Bayern, starting 17 of the 29 games that they have played till date. Having not been able to become an indispensable figure for Bayern, the 24-year-old’s frustrations have boiled over and he is now ready to consider a summer exit. This has alerted Real Madrid.
Real Madrid have indeed been touted to be in the market for defensive reinforcements ahead of the summer transfer window, with Zinedine Zidane set to undertake a squad overhaul. Defence, in particular, presents a major concern, owing to Sergio Ramos’ delicate contract situation.
The Real Madrid captain is in the final few months of his current deal with Los Blancos and having not managed to reach an agreement over a new contract, the defending La Liga champions have had to lay down a contingency plan. In addition, with Marcelo declining sharply, the need for a left-back has emerged as well, with Sergio Reguilon linked with a return to that end.
Lucas Hernandez, though, could possibly be a one-stop solution, seeing as he is equally adept at playing as a left-back as well as a centre-back. The French international could, in theory, vie with compatriot Ferland Mendy on the left flank while also possibly becoming Raphael Varane’s long-term partner at the heart of the Real Madrid defence, although Varane’s own future is uncertain.
Hernandez is not the only versatile Bayern Munich defender linked with Real Madrid, with a move for David Alaba being mooted since months. Having said that, Alaba is also linked with a possible switch to the Premier League, and it remains to be seen if the Merengues can land both players. For now, though, it looks like Lucas Hernandez is a target for Real Madrid over a possible summer deal.
