Liverpool have reportedly been offered the chance to sign Winston Reid as an alternative for Issa Diop by Premier League rivals West Ham United.
According to a report from the Daily Star, Premier League champions Liverpool have been offered an opportunity to sign veteran defender Winston Reid by West Ham United.
It is no secret that the Reds are in the transfer market for defensive reinforcements late in the window owing to the injuries to their frontline defenders. Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez are both long-term injury absentees while Joel Matip has had his fair share of fitness problems as well.
Fabinho, who has stepped up admirably in their absence as a makeshift centre-back, also picked up an injury recently, leaving Jurgen Klopp with youngsters Rhys Williams, Nat Phillips along with another makeshift option in captain Jordan Henderson.
This has led to Liverpool scouring the market for late reinforcements. The Reds were reported to have made an enquiry for West Ham United defender Issa Diop, who has fallen out of favour at the London Stadium under David Moyes. However, the Hammers have presented an alternative for the Merseyside giants, in the form of veteran defender Reid.
The 32-year-old has been with West Ham since 2010 and has made over 200 appearances for the London outfit. However, he has not featured for the club for close to three years now, having missed the 2018/19 campaign with a knee injury before spending the last year out on loan at MLS club Sporting Kansas City.
Reid, back at West Ham in December 2020, played for the club’s Under-23s in the Premier League 2 last week. A vastly experienced customer, the New Zealand international has worked his way back to full fitness during his time in the MLS and can be an interesting option for Klopp & co. to consider.
However, a move for the 32-year-old seems a tad bit unlikely now as Liverpool are reportedly close to signing Ben Davies from EFL Championship outfit Preston North End. With little time left for the mid-season transfer window to slam shut, it will be interesting to see who comes through the doors at Anfield.
