Atletico Madrid star Kieran Trippier has emerged as a shock transfer target for Manchester United as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer hunts for a right-back.
According to Forbes, Manchester United are in for a right-back this summer, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer keen on adding some competition for Aaron Wan-Bissaka. One of the players who could be identified as a potential option is Kieran Trippier of Atletico Madrid, although the club is also keeping an eye on Max Aarons.
Trippier has had a fruitful spell at Atleti since joining the club from Tottenham Hotspur in 2019. He has emerged as a crucial outlet in Diego Simeone’s pendulating back-four, with the defender primarily acting as a right-sided wing-back. His current contract at Wanda Metropolitano expires at the end of next season, however.
Although the former Burnley starlet has fallen behind Trent Alexander-Arnold in the England national team, his ability to bombard the right flank with his brilliant crossing ability still makes him one of the country’s best attacking full-backs. And much like the Liverpool star, Trippier is quite proficient when it comes to set-pieces.
It makes him an appealing target for Manchester United, who have shown a lot of desire in adding depth to their squad. The Red Devils already have a strong left-back department, with Luke Shaw and Alex Telles bringing variety to the table.
On the right flank, however, the team often gets restricted due to Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s limited attacking potential. The Englishman is, without a doubt, one of the best defensive right-backs in the Premier League, but his lack of offensive prowess makes it difficult for Manchester United threaten as much on the right-hand side.
It could also be a reason why the Red Devils have appeared so desperate to sign a new right-winger, with Jadon Sancho still being linked with a move to Old Trafford.
In Trippier, Solskjaer could find that missing variety in the right-back unit. The Atletico Madrid star has limitless potential going forward and his crossing ability could add more creative prowess to a side that already boasts the services of players like Marcus Rashford and Bruno Fernandes.
Trippier is not the only option either, with Manchester United, also mentioned earlier, also reportedly looking at Max Aarons. The Norwich City starlet is young and doesn’t have as much experience as his Atletico Madrid counterpart, though. In addition, he could also cost a fortune, so it will be interesting to see how United go about their business in the summer transfer window.
