Transfer News: Arsenal register interest in Jordan Amavi

Arsenal are reportedly interested in signing Jordan Amavi on a Bosman deal, as they continue their search for a left-back reinforcement.

According to a report by French publication L’Equipe, Arsenal have set their sights on Jordan Amavi in a bid to bolster their left-back options. The Marseille defender is also being tailed by Crystal Palace and Naples over a possible free transfer in the summer transfer window.

Amavi has grown by leaps and bounds since joining Marseille from Aston Villa. Initially signed on loan by the Ligue 1 outfit, the move was made permanent a year later and he has established himself as one of the best full-backs in France over the past four years or so.

Till date, the 26-year-old has amassed 119 appearances for Marseille, chipping in with 3 goals and 10 assists in those outings. However, Amavi’s future at Orange Velodrome is uncertain, as he has entered the final few months of his current deal. With talks over a renewal coming to a halt, it is likely that the Frenchman will leave Marseille this summer. And, Arsenal are interested in him.

Arsenal have been reported to be in the market for a left-back, and for good reason. Sead Kolasinac returned to Schalke on loan earlier this month and does not have a future at the Emirates. That leaves Mikel Arteta with Kieran Tierney as the only natural left-back he has at his disposal as things stand.

While the likes of Ainsley Maitland-Niles and Bukayo Saka have been proven to be able options for the left-back slot, they are unlikely to be depended on going forward, as suggested by Arteta’s usage of Cedric Soares in the absence of Tierney in the last couple of games. As a result, Arsenal are looking for ways to bolster the left-back slot, with Ryan Bertrand one of their priority targets.

Now, though, Amavi has appeared as an appealing prospect for the Gunners, who can possibly sign him on a Bosman deal in the summer, if he indeed runs his contract down at Marseille. Arsenal, though, have not made a concrete offer yet to his representatives and could be lagging behind Crystal Palace and Napoli, who have coincidentally also been linked with Tierney.

Crystal Palace, on the other hand, are sweating over the future of Tyrick Mitchell, who is also in a situation like Amavi’s and has been linked with Arsenal as well. What now remains to be seen is if Arsenal do end up launching the offensive to sign Amavi on a free transfer, or if Palace or Napoli end up swooping him away instead, thereby forcing them to turn their attention towards other targets.
