Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly interested in securing the services of Nicolo Barella from Inter Milan.
According to a report by Italian outlet Calciomercato, Nicolo Barella is the subject of interest from Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur over a possible move in the future. The Premier League duo have registered their interest in the Inter Milan midfielder.
Nicolo Barella joined Inter Milan from Cagliari in the summer of 2019 and has since established himself as one of the best midfielders on show in Serie A. Initially signed on loan by the Nerazzurri, the 23-year-old was so impressive with his performances last season that his move was made permanent last summer.
The player has only gone from strength to strength in the current season, with 2 goals and 8 assists in 25 appearances across all competitions. Now a pivotal figure for club and country, the Italian international’s performances have caught the eye of two of the biggest clubs in Europe, with Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur showing an interest in him.
Liverpool are currently in a precarious position over the future of Georginio Wijnaldum, who is expected to join Barcelona in the summer transfer window as a free agent. While the Reds did sign Thiago Alcantara last summer and have the impressive Curtis Jones going from strength to strength, the fitness woes of Naby Keita constantly leave Jurgen Klopp short of midfield options.
To that end, Barella is a viable target for Liverpool, who could add an element of creativity in their midfield arsenal by the addition of the young Italian. The Premier League champions, though, face stiff competition from Tottenham in pursuit of Barella.
At Tottenham, Jose Mourinho bolstered his midfield options by signing Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg. However, with Dele Alli and Gedson Fernandes expected to leave the club soon, a spot in the unit will be opening up, one that could be filled by Barella, whose addition would be a step in the right direction for Spurs.
Apart from Barella, Morgan Sanson is also touted to be on Tottenham’s radar. The report, though, does not mention whether Liverpool and Spurs are merely monitoring his progress or if they intend to make a move for the 23-year-old anytime soon. For now, it looks like Barella’s progress is not going unnoticed with two of the biggest clubs in the continent having him in their sights.
