Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur are among a host of Premier League clubs reportedly interested in signing Olympique Marseille midfielder Morgan Sanson.
According to a report from Daily Mail, Marseille midfielder Morgan Sanson is attracting a lot of interest from the Premier League with London rivals Arsenal and Tottenham said to be among the clubs keen on the 26-year-old.
Sanson came through the youth ranks at FC Le Mans and made the switch to Montpellier in the summer of 2013, where he grew into prominence. Four years later, the central midfielder joined Marseille has steadily grown into a key player for the Ligue 1 outfit.
Till date, Sanson has bagged 156 appearances for Les Olympiens bagging 25 goals and setting up 22 more. In the ongoing campaign, the Frenchman has featured 18 times for Andre Villas-Boas’s side, contributing with two goals and three assists in the process.
Valued at £20 million, Sanson has been attracting a lot of interest from England, as confirmed by his manager Villas-Boas. “The transfer window is open, Sanson is a player who is highly rated. He is a boy who interests English teams because of his characteristics, and it is possible that something could happen,” he said.
The report claims that Arsenal and Tottenham are showing an interest in the 26-year-old, but have been joined by the likes of Aston Villa and West Ham United as well.
Arsenal could use with reinforcements in the middle of the park considering that on-loan midfielder Dani Ceballos has struggled to make the desired impact since returning for a second spell at the Emirates last summer. Furthermore, the likes of Granit Xhaka and Mohamed Elneny have blown hot and cold so far this term.
So, bringing in someone like Sanson, who can provide goals from midfield while also being effective with his work off the ball, would be a viable move for Mikel Arteta’s side. The same goes for Tottenham Hotspur as well, who have had to heavily rely on the likes of Harry Kane, Son Heung-min and Tanguy Ndombele for contributions in the final third.
Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg has come in and shored things up in the centre, but alongside him, neither Moussa Sissoko nor Harry Winks has shown enough quality to nail down the starting berth. Sanson, to that end, can be an upgrade on the current options at Jose Mourinho’s disposal for the box-to-box role in the middle of the park.
Both Tottenham and Arsenal, who have shown an interest in Sanson in the past as well, will have to deal with interest from Aston Villa, who had made an attempt to sign him last year and could eye a bargain move for the 26-year-old, with his contract running out in 2022.
Apart from Sanson, Arsenal and Tottenham are also competing for the signing of RB Leipzig captain Marcel Sabitzer this month. It remains to be seen if either of the clubs make a move for the Frenchman before the end of the winter trading period.
