Transfer News: Manchester United urged to sign Wesley Fofana by Paul Scholes

Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes has urged the club to make a move for Leicester City centre-back Wesley Fofana.

As reported by ESPN, Manchester United have been advised to make a move for Leicester City defender Wesley Fofana in the ongoing transfer window by former midfielder and club legend Paul Scholes.

The 20-year-old centre-back came through the youth ranks at French club AS Saint-Etienne and went on to make 30 senior appearances for them, before making the switch to Leicester City this past summer. Since arriving, the Frenchman has made quite the impression in his debut season in England.

Fofana, so far in 2020/21, has featured 19 times in all competitions for the Foxes, registering a solitary assist in the process. The defender has helped Brendan Rodgers’ side to eight clean sheets in the process, playing a pivotal role in their challenge for the top four in the league, as well as their progression to the knockout stages of the Europa League.

Having been left impressed by the 20-year-old Frenchman, Scholes has urged Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to consider signing Fofana from Leicester to address their defensive problems. “If I was Ole and could sign a defender this month, I’d go for Wesley Fofana at Leicester,” he said.

“He’s only 20, but he has been outstanding and he has the potential to be anything he wants to be. United have done OK at the back this season, but they have been exposed when playing against the big teams, and that’s another problem they need to solve.”

Manchester United are seated at the top of the Premier League table. However, their tally of 24 goals conceded is the worst among the top teams in the standings currently. Neither of Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof have been consistent enough over the course of the term while Eric Bailly continues to be plagued with injury issues.

The Ivory Coast international has impressed in the last few matches, but with both Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo out of favour and Axel Tuanzebe being utilised at right-back of late, adding another centre-back would certainly help Manchester United.

This has seen the Red Devils get linked with a number of central defenders including Leicester City’s Caglar Soyuncu. However, Scholes is of the opinion that his teammate, Fofana, would be a good addition for his former employers.

But, any move for the Frenchman this month or in the summer seems highly unlikely to happen considering that the Foxes signed him recently and have him tied down to a contract till 2025. Given how well Fofana has done in a short spell at the King Power Stadium, the idea of them entertaining a potential sale would be extremely far-fetched.
