Transfer News: Arsenal in pole position to sign Christian Eriksen

Arsenal are reportedly leading the race to sign former Tottenham star Christian Eriksen from Inter Milan in the January transfer window.

According to a report by Italian outlet Inter Live, Arsenal are in pole position in the race to sign Christian Eriksen in the January transfer window. The former Tottenham Hotspur playmaker is set to leave Inter Milan this winter, with several other clubs rumoured to be chasing his signature.

Eriksen joined Inter Milan from Tottenham Hotspur in January 2020 and has since endured the biggest challenge of his career. Having arrived at San Siro on the back of a superb stint with Spurs, where he developed into one of the best playmakers in Europe, very few could have envisioned such a struggle for the Dane in Italy.

While Eriksen did feature quite regularly in the second half of 2019/20, he has become an entirely peripheral figure this term, starting just 5 of the 21 games that Inter have played. Recent comments by CEO Giuseppe Marotta have made it clear that the player has no future at the club, which has piqued the interest of several big name clubs across Europe, including Arsenal.

The early rumours linking Arsenal with Eriksen suggested that Inter wanted Granit Xhaka as part of a swap deal. Since then, those claims have disappeared, paving the way for a potential cut-price move in the January transfer window. The interest from Arsenal makes sense as well, with Mikel Arteta’s men struggling for creativity this term.

While they are currently on their best run yet this season in the Premier League, thanks in large part to the advent of Emile Smith Rowe and his partnership with Bukayo Saka, the Gunners have no one else to provide an injection of creativity, especially with Mesut Ozil banished from the first-team squad by the Arsenal boss.

As a result, it has been reported that Arsenal could be in the market for an attacking midfielder, with rumours linking them with Julian Brandt also gathering steam. Now, though, it looks like they are leading the race to sign Eriksen, although the report does suggest that a bid is still not quite in the works.

Apart from Arsenal, several other clubs, including Manchester United, PSG, Real Madrid, have been linked with Eriksen. However, with Arsenal in pole position to land him it will be interesting to see if any other club can usurp him in his pursuit before the January transfer window ends.
