Barcelona could reportedly make a move to re-sign Hector Bellerin if Joan Laporta is re-elected as the Catalan giants’ president.
According to a report by Daily Mirror, Joan Laporta is eager to take Hector Bellerin back to Camp Nou if his bid to be re-elected as the Barcelona president is successful. The Spanish international is also open to the prospect of returning to Barcelona, who could launch a £22 million move to re-sign him next summer.
Bellerin joined Arsenal in the summer of 2011, leaving Barcelona’s fabled La Masia academy in search of a clear pathway to first-team football. The Spaniard took little time to break into the Gunners’ first-team setup, making his competitive debut in September 2013. Since then, he has grown in stature steadily and has been their first-choice right-back for over half-a-decade now.
While injuries have hampered his progress in recent years, the 25-year-old has still been quite impressive for Arsenal, where he has gone on to rake in over 200 appearances. However, his time at the Emirates could be coming to an end soon, with a possible return to Barcelona being mooted.
The report suggests that Barcelona could well be set to make a move for Bellerin next summer if Joan Laporta succeeds in his bid to be re-elected as their president. The 25-year-old is a key target for Laporta, who has been in discussions with his representatives over a possible switch.
Daily Mirror also adds that Bellerin is open to the prospect of returning to Barcelona, which could be understandable, seeing as Arsenal’s fortunes have been steadily dropping in recent years. However, signing another right-back makes little sense for Barcelona, considering they only landed Sergino Dest this past summer.
With Sergi Roberto also a part of the squad, securing the services of Bellerin will only create an unnecessary overload for the right-back slot, unless Roberto is utilised as a midfielder, seeing as Dest has largely impressed bar the odd sub-par display. Having said that, Laporta could sanction a £22 million to swoop the 25-year-old away from Arsenal next summer.
What now remains to be seen is if Barcelona do make a move for Bellerin in the summer transfer window, if Laporta is re-elected as the president. For now, it seems as if the Arsenal full-back is the subject of interest from the Barcelona presidential hopeful.
