Manchester United have reportedly set sights on Atletico Madrid star Saul Niguez in a bid to bolster their midfield.
According to Todo Fichajes, Manchester United have recently reignited their pursuit for Atletico Madrid midfielder Saul Niguez. After a disappointing summer window, Manchester United are expected to spend big in the coming windows to challenge for silverware.
Saul, who arrived at Europe’s biggest stage and earned the world’s attention with his famous solo goal versus Bayern Munich, has been a mainstay for the Rojiblancos and the Spanish national team in recent years. The 26-year-old was crucial in Atletico Madrid’s Champions League run where they finished runners-up in 2015/16 and when they won the Europa League in the 2017/18 season.
One of Diego Simeone’s go-to men over the years, Saul remains a key player for Atletico Madrid. However, with his stock being as high as it has been in the last few years, it is unsurprising that a number of top clubs across Europe have been showing interest in him. At present, Manchester United are after Saul.
Paul Pogba’s future at Old Trafford has been under great scrutiny in recent weeks, which is why Manchester United could be tempted to sign Saul as a replacement for the Frenchman. Saul could prove to be a valuable asset in midfield for the Red Devils, as he could slot in beside Fred in a dynamic double pivot.
With Manchester United also linked with Jack Grealish in recent weeks, the signing of the talented duo could really sort the Red Devils’ midfield and attack for the next several years, truly making them a force to reckon with.
However, Saul, who is currently contracted with Atletico Madrid till 2026, could cost Manchester United north of €70 million, although his release clause is set at €150 million. With Saul’s signing seeming likely only on the occasion that Pogba is sold, United would be hoping to recoup a large chunk of the fee with the sale of the Frenchman, who remains one of the world’s top midfielders.
Saul, who is certainly a top talent for Atletico Madrid, would prove to be a shrewd replacement for Pogba. However, Manchester United should be aware that the deal would not come cheap, and the fact that they have also just signed Donny van de Beek, 23, should be considered as well.
