Manchester United could reportedly have the chance to sign Raphael Varane as he enters the final 18 months of his contract with Real Madrid.
According to a report by Manchester Evening News, Manchester United have the chance to sign Raphael Varane nearly ten years after he snubbed them to join Real Madrid. The French defender is set to enter the final 18 months of his contract with the Spanish heavyweights.
Varane joined Real Madrid from Lens in the summer of 2011. Widely regarded as one of the most promising young centre-backs in the world at the time, the player has already gone on to enjoy a truly great career, winning almost every trophy that he has ever contested for.
Now one of the best defenders in the world, the 27-year-old is a mainstay in the defence for Real Madrid and has gone on to rake in over 300 appearances for the Spanish giants. However, the French international’s future at the Bernabeu seems to be uncertain as the end of 2020 approaches, with his contract having just 18 months to run out. And, Manchester United could pounce.
Manchester United’s interest in Varane is not new. In fact, the Red Devils have been eager to sign the Frenchman almost a decade ago before he ended up joining Real Madrid instead. Back then, United had ended up securing the services of Phil Jones instead, but the Englishman’s signing has not quite worked out due to a myriad of injury issues.
As for the current state of their defence, Manchester United captain Harry Maguire seems to have recovered from a wobbly start to the season. However, while Eric Bailly is an unreliable figure due to his struggles with injuries, Jones and Marcos Rojo are surplus to requirements at Old Trafford.
That leaves Ole Gunnar Solskjaer with the inconsistent Victor Lindelof and the inexperienced Axel Tuanzebe as the only other central defenders at his disposal. Therefore, it is not surprising why Manchester United would be interested in signing a centre-back in the coming windows, with David Carmo among those linked with a move.
Dayot Upamecano is believed to be on their radar as well, but the Frenchman has been tipped to join Bayern Munich instead. Now, it looks like Manchester United could make a move for Upamecano’s compatriot Varane instead.
Set to enter the final 18 months of his Real Madrid contract, Varane could be primed for a move if he does not reach an agreement over a renewal. His value, too, has dropped considerably from the £100 million figure that was quoted a couple of years ago.
What will now be interesting to see is if Manchester United indeed launch the offensive for Raphael Varane in the future. With Sergio Ramos’s future at Real Madrid also up in the air, Real Madrid’s defence could well be set for a rehaul.
