Transfer News: Sergio Romero pushing for January exit from Manchester United

Sergio Romero has reportedly taken it upon himself to force a January exit from Manchester United by training alone.

According to The Sun, Sergio Romero is gunning for an exit from Old Trafford in the upcoming January transfer window. The goalkeeper fell out with Manchester United following disputes over not getting a starting role in the UEFA Europa League semi-final last season.

However, he has returned to training, although his primary objective is to keep himself fit and hope that Manchester United will let him leave on a free transfer in January. Romero’s contract at Old Trafford expires at the end of the ongoing campaign but he could even be willing to give up on his payoff, worth around £1.5 million to secure an exit.

The 33-year-old was close to leaving Manchester United in the summer transfer window when he was courted by Everton. He was keen to move to Goodison Park too, but the move reportedly did not materialise because of his £100,000 per week wages.

So it remains clear that Romero needs to slash his wages if he wants to move elsewhere, especially after becoming Manchester United’s fourth-choice goalkeeper due to the return of Dean Henderson and the subsequent exclusion from the squad.

The Englishman, who spent last season on loan at Sheffield United, is already pushing to become the club’s first-choice goalkeeper at the expense of current Manchester United no. 1 David de Gea. Although the youngster is still a long way off due to the Spaniard’s tremendous start to the campaign, it has kept Romero out of the picture nonetheless.

The Argentine, in fact, is yet to feature in a single game in this new season, though it is primarily because of his disputes with the board. So, it could be an ideal time for Manchester United themselves part ways with the goalkeeper, who is clearly surplus to the requirements following the return of Henderson.

Romero has been linked with a move to Major League Soccer in the past while Leeds United were also quoted as a potential destination for the Manchester United goalkeeper.

The Whites, in fact, could still use the services of the veteran star, who could put pressure on youngster Illan Meslier while the Argentine connection between him and Marcelo Bielsa could be useful as well, although the club do admittedly boast the services of Kiko Casilla. As for Romero, it remains to be seen if he can leave Manchester United this January.
