Paul McGrath has iterated that the time is right for Manchester United to sell Paul Pogba, who does not fit in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s squad.
In his column for the Sunday World, Paul McGrath has advocated for Manchester United to sell Paul Pogba at the earliest possible opportunity. The Manchester United legend has claimed that there is no room for the French international in the tactical scheme that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer employs at Old Trafford.
Pogba joined Manchester United from Juventus in the summer of 2016, in what was then a world record €100 million deal. Over the past four years or so, though, the French midfielder has blown hot and cold in the middle of the park, with a myriad of factors contributing to his inconsistencies.
Pogba has continued to remain inconsistent under the tutelage of Solskjaer and has made a sub-par start to the 2020/21 season, including the horrific display against Arsenal this past weekend. Such performances have seen him go in and out of the Manchester United starting lineup.
That Pogba and his agent Mino Raiola have constantly flirted with the idea of a dream move to Real Madrid has not helped matters much. Now, though, Manchester United legend Paul McGrath has opined on his position at Old Trafford while writing in his column for the Sunday World.
“I am more convinced than ever that United should have taken the financial hit on Paul Pogba and moved him out of the club during the summer. No matter how much it hurt their balance sheet. The big problem seems to be that there is no room for him in the tactical scheme favoured for United by Solskjaer.”
“This sees United using two sitting midfielders, Scott McTominay and Fred, one attacking midfielder in Bruno Fernandes and then he turns loose any three of his attacking talent, with the likes of Jesse Lingard, Daniel James and even Juan Mata to back up the trio already mentioned.”
“The argument being that as long as ‘the sitters’ give the back four plenty of protection, Fernandes and whoever is playing from among the ample attacking force, ought to score enough goals to win any game. There’s no room there for Paul Pogba to play as a link man, taking the ball from the back and ushering it forward.”
While it was suggested that Pogba should be staying at Manchester United for the Red Devils to take the next step in their evolution under Solskjaer, the Frenchman just is not helping matters for himself with his inconsistent displays.
With Donny van de Beek, whose transfer to Manchester United has drawn some criticism, at the disposal of Solskjaer as well, there could be a sense that selling Pogba could be a prudent move. If Pogba does leave, though, it will be interesting to see if United can recoup the €100 million they paid for him in 2016.
