Transfer News: Arsenal still in contention to sign Houssem Aouar

Arsenal are still interested in Lyon midfielder Houssem Aouar, although they could face stiff competition from Juventus and other European giants.

According to Tuttosport, Arsenal are still interested in the services of Houssem Aouar. The Gunners, along with Paris Saint-Germain are among several clubs plotting a move for the Lyon midfielder in the upcoming summer transfer window, although it is Juventus who could emerge as favourites.

The Italian giants have an excellent connection with Lyon, with their presidents – Michel Aulas and Andrea Agnelli – sharing a good bonding. It could help them seal a potential deal for Aouar, who could be identified as an ideal replacement for Aaron Ramsey as the former Arsenal star has struggled at life in Turin.

Speaking of Arsenal, they were heavily linked with a move for Aouar in the summer transfer window. The Frenchman even became their priority target for a while especially after an outstanding campaign with Lyon that saw the French club reach the semi-final of the UEFA Champions League.

Aouar, in that regard, was a vital cog of their midfield unit, effectively attracting the interest of Mikel Arteta. Unfortunately for Arsenal, though, the midfielder’s hefty price tag of €50 million was too much for the club as they ultimately settled for the services of Thomas Partey of Atletico Madrid.

Although Partey also reportedly had a €50 million release clause, Arsenal’s Lucas Torreira joining Los Colchoneros on a season-long loan deal may have been a key factor in that deal.

Nevertheless, Arsenal have struggled in midfield this season, with last season’s top performer Dani Ceballos failing to replicate his form so far while Partey is yet to find his feet in the Premier League. And although we are still in the early stages of the competition, the lack of creativity in the middle of the park, especially after the axing of Mesut Ozil, has been clearly evident.

That is where Arsenal could use the services of someone like Aouar. The French international was almost untouchable with the ball at his feet last season, even at the highest of football. That, combined with his remarkable work-rate and an ability to win back possession for his side, makes him a tailor-made fit for Arteta’s tactical setup.

Unfortunately for the Gunners, Juventus’ recent interest is not good news for them, especially if we consider the good relationship between the Serie A champions and Lyon. So, the North London giants may have to settle for another alternative in the market next summer.
