Manchester United have completed the signing of former Paris Saint-Germain striker Edinson Cavani on a free transfer.

As confirmed by the club’s official website, Manchester United have wrapped up another deal on the transfer deadline day, with Uruguayan international striker Edinson Cavani joining the club on a free transfer.

The 33-year-old has had an illustrious career at club level. Having started out at Danubio in his homeland, Cavani moved to Europe in 2007, signing for Palermo. He then had a successful stint with Napoli, before signing for Paris Saint-Germain in 2013.

During his time in the French capital, Cavani grew into one of the most prolific forwards in the game and went on to score 200 goals in 301 appearances, becoming the club’s record goalscorer, while winning six Ligue 1 titles. However, the veteran striker left the club in July earlier this year after his contract with Les Parisiens ran out.

Cavani’s free agency had seen him get linked to various clubs across Europe. However, Manchester United have been able to seal his signing late in the transfer window. The 33-year-old has signed a one-year contract with the 20-time English champions, with an option of extending it by another year.

Upon completing the transfer, the Uruguayan striker said, “Manchester United is one of the greatest clubs in the world, so it is a real honour to be here. I’ve worked really hard during the time off and I feel eager to compete and represent this incredible club.”

Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer lavished praises on his latest recruit, hailing Cavani’s experience and leadership. “Edinson is an experienced ultimate professional who always gives everything for his team. He’ll bring energy, power, leadership and a great mentality to the squad but, most importantly, he’ll bring goals,” he said.

Cavani becomes Manchester United’s third deadline day signing after Alex Telles arrived from FC Porto. The club also confirmed the transfer of teenage sensation Amad Traore, although the 18-year-old will be linking up with the team in January.

While there are some concerns regarding Cavani’s signing due to his age and recent injury issues, the 33-year-old’s goalscoring record speaks for itself. His experience and winning mentality could have a huge influence on Manchester United’s young attacking trio of Mason Greenwood, Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial.
